I just told a grown man to get headphones

Hotel breakfast. Small room.

A man was on a video call to what sounded like his wife.

He then calls his girlfriend.

All audible to me and the rest of the small breakfast room.

I left quicker than I was going to as his voice was dominating the room. As I left I said

Honestly, please get some headphones. It's much more polite than everyone having to listen to your conversation.

He gawped at me. As in, how dare I. I walked off, as I didn't want an argument, I just wanted him to shut up.

I'm chuffed I said something rather than did the British thing of glaring. So I needed to tell someone 😁

Did everyone clap?

CelesteCunningham · 26/07/2024 08:39

I did that getting off a train once.

CelesteCunningham · 26/07/2024 08:39

Although, tbh, in your case I may have enjoyed the gossip over my breakfast Grin

Galoop · 26/07/2024 08:39

I would've clapped then given you a hi five!

Apfelkuchen · 26/07/2024 08:40

You are a hero! If your words have made just one of these self entitled idiots slightly more self aware, thank you from me.

Meredusoleil · 26/07/2024 08:40

Well done you!

I nearly did that to someone on the underground yesterday. Some people can be so unbelievably rude and entitled 🙄

LividSummer · 26/07/2024 08:41

Honesty I’m not religious but you just did god’s work.

We need to make it socially unacceptable like not wearing seatbelts or shitting on the floor.

In Japan, it’s socially unacceptable. Fantastic place.

Allthatsbeautifuldriftsaway · 26/07/2024 08:43

Thank you.

Cantgetyou · 26/07/2024 08:45

Well done, it is staggering how rude people can be.

I asked a woman to stop shouting down her phone in the quiet coach on a train yesterday. She gave me a filthy look and continued, but the lady opposite then also told her to shut up or move…and kept loudly repeating it. Eventually the woman moved (into one of the 6 carriages where you can use a phone).

Bloody annoying , especially on trains but sometimes you hear a real gem of a conversation going on and hope they don't get off the train before the climax 🤣🤣

Good for you!

I did that on a train recently. I said ‘excuse me, we can all hear that!’ as if he couldn’t possibly be aware of his faux pas. He switched it off immediately.

Yup, I was in the nailbar yesterday and a lady in the pedicure chair had her phone on speaker. The person at the other end was telling about money she owed him how she treated the dog. Her cooking is terrible. She never said a word. The whole room was silent listening! Eventually she said we will talk about this later, I am in the salon and everyone is listening and hung up. Headphones 🎧 would have prevented her embarrassment

EllenLRipley · 26/07/2024 08:58

I was on a train a last summer and the young man next to me did this so I chipped into the conversation repeatedly as if I was included then played daft when he ignored me. 😂

mitogoshi · 26/07/2024 09:02

The thing with phone calls is that you can hear half the conversation anyway so doesn't bother me as much, but playing videos or music is so annoying, grown adults and toddlers alike. Get your dc headphones if you insist on ignoring them in restaurants, on buses etc but better still, read them books, do puzzles etc (we did, they hadn't invented smart phones then and dc were far better behaved on balance)

Monkeysatonthewall · 26/07/2024 09:05

Wait..... He has a wife and a girlfriend??

Globules · 26/07/2024 09:06

Thanks all. Good to know I've done God's work this morning.

I did start loudly contributing to the conversation with the wife @EllenLRipley

"Tell Tom he has to go to work whether he feels like it or not (wife was saying Tom couldn't be bothered to go) "

"Use money saving expert to do a price comparison (wife had started looking at loans for the kitchen)"

He looked over at me both those times, but didn't lower his volume or lower wife's volume on the phone.

I joked with my daughter that I should go put my arms round him during the call with his girlfriend and feign horror when I saw another woman. She wouldn't let me though.

I just couldn't leave it. Too annoying.

Well done OP! I wish we could all unite and call this out every time it happens. This and blasting videos, music in public. On trains is the worst. And younger people these days make phone calls on speaker and hold the phone hovering in front of them instead of holding it to their ear so we all have to hear both sides.

GalileoHumpkins · 26/07/2024 09:08

You've jumped the shark way too soon OP, contributing to the conversation 🙄

Isn’t it considered socially unacceptable. I certainly do!

dontcryformeargentina · 26/07/2024 09:25

Well done. I truly hate when people put loud speakers on and force everyone else around to listen

Gladtobeout · 26/07/2024 09:28

Annoying he didn't do gf first then wife. You could have dobbed him in it while on the phone to his wife.

PrincessofWells · 26/07/2024 09:33

I asked a chap in a cafe if he needed headphones because what he was listening to was quite invasive.

He said I'm blind and it's a screen reader.
I apologised profusely and fined myself a tenner to put in the food bank.

Things aren't always what they seem 🙁

Well done! I would have just glared.
