What is it like to be “Trade” (vs corporate)

When I was at school, my parents looked down their nose at anyone going into vocational training at 16 (former Soviet Union). It have never even considered it.

2 degrees later, living in the UK, middle-management on £70k with night sweats about deadlines, I watch my plumber neighbour living to a similar standard, making his own rules when and with whom to work.

Two contractors coming to do my loft and en-suite respectively also seem content with earnings / lifestyle, the loft man used to be engineering manager.

I am excellent at decorating (painting) and have been thinking about jacking it in working for a man. At 46, female, am I being delusional about security and benefits of being self-employed? Where would I even start?

It's quite an old fashioned view..my dad is similar.
I know plenty of tradesmen whi earn lots. Maybe start with evening courses first amd get experienced. Then you cam begin to advertise but you won't be able to charge tip wack until you get good.
I would think having a female trades person would be great for women living on their own who don't want a bloke coming over to do work.

I have been wondering the same thing
Lying here worrying about a work issue
But maybe I'd worry anything I built would fall over too...
Hard to tell

Its so hard to get good reliable trades people, the ones who are reliable & good earn really good money - could you initially go part time to build it up and have a buffer before taking the plunge?

I’d much rather deal with a female tradesperson than the teeth sucking, tutting and eye rolling you get from some of the blokes I’ve tried to book (who half the time then disappear off the face of the bloody earth after getting a quote!)
