Laughing at what the neighbours said

In the last few weeks we have had a new driveway and garage doors.
(All needed as in bad condition)

It was DHs birthday a big one.
Our grandchildren (or their parents)designed a very large plaque for the top of the garage doors.
It's of DHs favourite football team. Plus stick figures and their names.
We love it. And it fits in the space.
We have a long drive and to see this sign you need to come by the gates which are at least 5m from the footpath and another 6m to the doors.

Next door neighbours have told us that even though we have spent a lot of money on the new things this plaque lowers the tone of what we want to achieve.

Don't know what we wanted to achieve just a driveway that wasn't full of wobbly flagstones and doors that will not fall off when opened.

Pity we couldn't get an even bigger sign.

You know we need to see a picture, right?
On the face of it, sounds like they are being bonkers but if it’s neon and flashing they may have a point.
I had a passerby (dog walker) complain about my Christmas lights once. My neighbours love them!

Listentogold · 25/07/2024 15:55

As it has their names on including surnames I won't be posting a photo.

It doesn't flash or light up.
Lots of gold and black colours.

Funny enough they have more lights than Blackpool.
Lots of ornaments and the dreaded wind chimes.
At Christmas they get more lights and an large inflatable Santa (we can't see that as it's in the back garden)

We just laughed at them.

Given all the other stuff youve just said about them who are they to judge! Go one further and get yourself a flagpole up with said football teams emblem on!

It sounds hideous but each to their own i guess.

Listentogold · 25/07/2024 16:08

I don't care if any of you think this sign is chavy.
It was not cheap.
Do you not keep the pictures from your children which they do at school or do you destroy them all.
This sign was made and received with love from our grandchildren.

Even if they thought that they shouldn't have said it, trying to crap on a lovely personal & thoughtful gift from your grandchildren is petty and mean spirited of them.

KreedKafer · 25/07/2024 16:27

People who are sneering about it being 'chavvy' (which is an obnoxious term to use) or think it 'sounds hideous' are kind of missing the point. The point is not whether the neighbours were correct in their opinion, but whether they were rude to express that opinion to the OP.

And the answer to that question is yes, they were extremely rude.

1989whome · 30/07/2024 09:25

As long as you haven't put it in the neighbours garden it's naff all to do with them. All shitty opinions should be kept to yourself. Sounds like a lovely thoughtful gift for you to treasure.

Cuppateatea · 30/07/2024 09:28

Sounds fabulous! I would love something like this too. Perhaps your neighbours are jealous of your relationship with your family, DCs and DGCs - do they have many visitors?
Either way, who cares what they think. Enjoy it 😍

Mammma91 · 30/07/2024 09:28

I don’t understand how this could bother anyone. I quite like the idea of a nice personal touch to the garden!

Shinyandnew1 · 30/07/2024 09:31

a very large plaque

Ooh, come now…how large is very large,@Listentogold ?!

IneedAbiggerWindchime · 30/07/2024 09:32

I think it sounds awesome!

TheShiningCarpet · 30/07/2024 09:32

Is it permanent or just for the party?

IrisDenver · 30/07/2024 09:41

I would look at it and think it's dreadful but would see that it's family orientated and let them get on and enjoy it as there are far worse things on display outside peoples houses.

An 'I'm voting Labour' sign for example.

Lifeisapeach · 30/07/2024 09:51

A very large permanent football team themed plaque on the front of your house?

If it’s a nice street and house I would have to agree with your neighbour.

MissMoneyFairy · 30/07/2024 09:59

They are just jealous that yours is more interesting than their front garden now and will attract more attention than their gnomes

Peonies12 · 30/07/2024 10:02

HAHA it's hilarious you won't post a photo because it has their full names. Surely having your full names advertised on your house is incredibly stupid from a fraud / data protection perspective? As anyone could know your full name and address?

Very good point. Op can you show us a pic with the names scribbled out?

goingtotown · 30/07/2024 10:05

If it's got your names on it, put it in the back garden.

TheBizzies · 30/07/2024 10:07

If it's a spurs one then they are not wrong 😂

GoldenPombear · 30/07/2024 10:09

Depends which team

vickylou78 · 30/07/2024 10:10

If it's got names and surnames on ..do you think security wise the plaque should be somewhere in back garden?

Listentogold · 30/07/2024 10:19

It's not on the front of the house it's over the garage doors.
The garage is separate from the house and at least 11 metres from the public footpath.
Next doors can only see it if they come to our side gates which are 5 metres from the public footpath.
The sign is about 60cm x 20cm.
I did ask the neighbours across from us if they can see/read it and they haven't noticed it.

Next door neighbours do not like anyone having anything new always make sarcastic remarks. Eg the lady at number 10 had a mobility scooter and they told her that everyone in the streets hate her because she is getting something for nothing.

LaughingElderberry · 30/07/2024 10:28

I don't think it sounds like my kind of thing, but that's irrelevant as long as you and your family like it. I'm sure there would be things on my house and in my garden that wouldn't be your style - that's what makes us all different and it would be bloody boring if we were all the same!

The neighbours need to get over themselves - it's not like it's a five foot neon cock and balls on the garage door.
