If you're driving, use the park and ride - there's a few, so the best one will depend on where you're coming from, but one is at the designer outlet, so you might also want to visit there. Or go on the train.

I like to walk around the walls and just wander around, past the Minster, along the river, up the Shambles etc. There's a cat trail (pictures and models of cats on buildings and in windows), but when I tried to do it, it was too busy to look for the cats and not bump into people as well.

There's a street food market with seating near the Shambles, I like to eat there.

I presume you mean your DH is going to the Railway Museum? I'm not particularly interested in trains, but I liked the Royal Train and the Japanese bullet train.

I went in Clifford's tower shortly after it reopened, it's impressive, but it seemed expensive for what it was, and I had a half price entry (M&S Sparks offer I think).

Thank you
I'll have a Google about the park and ride

I'm not bothered about the outlet shops but thank you
I much prefer cats to trains!

@Kitkat1523 bar walls?

Google them! ….the section that runs behind the minster is particularly lovely

Wahine24 · 25/07/2024 17:32

The bar wall go almost completely round the city centre they were the defence of the city parts of it might be closed near the station because there was work being done in that area

WrinklesShminkles · 25/07/2024 17:34

Partisan cafe on Micklegate is close to the Railway museum and does lovely (vegetarian) breakfasts, coffees, cakes etc.

IggyAce · 25/07/2024 17:35

We always park and ride from Rawcliffe bar but there are several depending which side of the city you arrive. I enjoy a walk along the city walls you get stunning views across the city.
I usually eat in Rise or Wheldrakes, Wheldrakes does some lovely cakes and several are vegan or gluten free.

Bearpawk · 25/07/2024 17:36

Last time I stayed in York I parked for free along scarcroft road (there's some free parking further along) and walked in - about 20 mins into the city wall and over the river.
The shambles shops are cute, the market is mainly tat but the food market in there is great. Lots of choice and great for veggies.

DelphiniumBlue · 25/07/2024 17:38

I loved the Jorvik centre, and also really enjoyed a guided walk, I think it was through Viator, we did the Viking one.

Parking is about £10 all day at the railway museum, and it’s not far to walk into the centre of York.

I’m killing five hours in York tomorrow while my car is in for a service. I’m not parking but I’d go to the park and ride.

Things I’ll do include browsing in Browns and Fenwick’s, lunch at Cafe La Tazzina (near Bar Convent) and a tea stop at Burr on Lendal.

If I were adding in other things I’d go to the York Art Gallery which currently has a Monet exhibition.

Irisginger · 25/07/2024 18:29

Fat rascal in Betty's?

Glitterbiscuits · 25/07/2024 20:31

Oh is there a Bettys in York? I thought it was Harrogate! I love a Fat Rascal

There’s a lovely one in Ilkley too….we were there at the weekend and bought some fat rascals

The art gallery is good.
York Museum Gardens near Lendal Bridge is pretty and a nice place if you fancy a picnic, weather permitting. Plus you can walk down Dame Judi Dench walk, next door, along the river.
If you fancy the ghost merchants be prepared to queue for hours. They have a second one five mins walk away though that’s less well known.
There’s a brilliant tea room on Goodramgate in a medieval building. I forget the name sorry.
If you walk further out Bishopthorpe Road has loads of independent places to eat and shop, it’s lovely.
Definitely use the Park and Rides. Enjoy!

Fantastic croissants, bread etc food at C&S bakery opposite Clifford's Tower. Their Cherry Bakewell croissants are my favourite breakfast when I get off the No. 3 buss from Askham Bar Park and Ride.

Something to bear in mind... most of the P&Rs close by 8.30pm. If you're staying out later, use Rawcliffe Bar (check times).
