Is there a specific antidepressant medication which is helpful for emotion control in adhd?

Thinking of asking for Sertraline again, to help with emotion regulation, perhaps take it for 12 months and see if it helps me get my life back on track. My moods can be quite low and I'm self medicating with alcohol and food.

If you have adhd, diagnosed or otherwise have you found antidepressants to help?

My DD takes duloxetine.

She says it helps.

Diagnosed adhd.

DS is diagnosed (he is an adult, not a child) and takes sertraline. He thinks it helps.

Someone I know has found it really useful in emotional regulation for ADHD and EUPD. They are such a different person on it. Hasn't helped the ADHD but it's helped the emotional mood swings and frustration /anger.

The only one ive found i can tolerate is fluoxetine

Do you take ADHD medication? I've heard from several people that the right ADHD medication was the only thing that balanced their moods and stopped them needing to self medicate with alcohol - some of those people had had pretty much a lifetime of antidepressant usage with little to no effect.

This is what I'm thinking now. Maybe I just need to try the adhd meds.

I was on citalopram for years and switched to sertraline at the start of this year and I haven't felt depressed at all since starting sertraline. I used to feel depressed at times on the citalopram.

I'm also on Methylphenidate which I've been on since December, after being on Lisdexamfetamine for 2 years so I can't say for definite if it's the sertraline or the adhd meds that have helped.

How come they agreed to give you Sertraline alongside the adhd meds? Surely it would nake sense to see how one is without the other.

How is your focus and motivation? Are you getting things done?

SSRIs haven't helped a great deal for me (audhd) but I'm now on venlafaxine (an SNRI) and it's brilliant. It's even stopping my brain from racing ahead and helps me slow down and focus. It's the best thing I've ever been prescribed.

I came off sertraline when going on adhd meds as concerta is all I need and since going on the correct meds life has been dramatically changed. I did not think you were able to take antidepressants if you have adhd and certainly not on adhd meds.

Really?
Im on fluoxetine and dexamphetamine. Its been a life-changing combo for me.

MendaciousMabel · 15/08/2024 22:35

I was told it’s okay to take sertraline and adhd meds together but you have to be careful in case you get serotonin Syndrom which is rare but can be very serious.

LameBorzoi · 15/08/2024 22:37

I spent years stuffing around with SSRIs. They didn't work. ADHD medications were life changing.

Brooklandhouse · 05/09/2024 17:13

Have tried numerous antidepressants over the last number of years with no positive effects. Quite the opposite really. In that time frame I've come to realize that ADHD might be a serious possibility and it could explain why the antidepressants haven't worked as supposedly there is a link.

I'm due for ADHD assessment soon. I'm fed up of feeling like this. Wondering could ADHD medication help!

@Psychoticbreak @LameBorzoi ur posts have really give me hope after having none!!

I was given venlafexine for suspected PMDD, I wasn’t depressed but struggle with emotional regulation. I feel like it helped but I got awful cramp and a muscle in my leg twitched non stop for two days so I came off. The withdrawal was horrible.

I think now I have ADHD and not PMDD so watching this thread with interest.
