Anyone any experience of their parked car being hit by the police during a chase?

The police visited my son's flat earlier to tell him that they hit his car (technically my car) while chasing someone. He was out and they briefly spoke to his girlfriend and left their details saying they'd try to pop back later.

They didn't pop back as presumably they've been busy and so we'll have to pick this up tomorrow. Does anyone know if we have to deal with this like a normal insurance claim? I'm the car owner but DS has it away at Uni and it's insured in his name but he's still 22 so can't have a protected no claims and has a relatively high excess which I know we should get back but he has no income so that'll be down to me. I've not reported it yet as wasn't sure if there is a different system as it's the police involved.

It'll need a complete new bumper at least and it's the hassle as much as anything. He's 2 and a half hours from me and has no-one else there who can drive/has access to a car. Recent experience with my ex being hit whilst stationary under the same insurance company showed no approved repairers in our area and DS is even more remote.

He was going to come home for a visit in a few weeks time and get the car MOT'd when down here so that's more hassle :(

I’m fairly sure you have to do it through your insurance, and you should have informed them straight away.
