What towns on the southwest coast for a 2 day seaside break?

I'm imagining those towns where Hercule Poirot would go to recover from his nerves. Something with a Cornwall vibe but not as lively as Brighton. Pretty hotels, views, little boutiques and good local food.

I would go to Cornwall but its too far to travel for 2 nights from london

Any suggestions?????

Torquay ??

CormorantStrikesBack · 23/07/2024 20:46

Lymington?

JenaWren · 23/07/2024 20:46

Lyme Regis much fit your bill?

On the east side of Dorset. Easy access to the coast path. The Cobb is beautiful. Nice places to mooch and eat.

DilemmaDelilah · 23/07/2024 20:52

I don't recommend Torquay or Paignton at the moment - both are a bit run down which is a real shame. Dartmouth would fit the bill but it's a bit further to travel. I love Bude, just over the border into North Cornwall, but again it's not so easy to get to. You could try Weymouth maybe?

Poole is hugely underrated, in my opinion. We've had some lovely weekends there.

Was going to say Poole

leeverarch · 23/07/2024 21:41

Swanage
Lyme Regis
Charmouth if you like fossil hunting

TitInATrance · 23/07/2024 21:46

Sidmouth? Lovely coast and parks for a gentle stroll.

Tootingbec · 23/07/2024 21:50

Eastbourne - stay at The Grand - very Hercule P! Lovely walks along the sea front and then up and over the South Downs to Beachy Head.

Eastbourne has lots of lovely little cafes and interesting shops (away from the rather soulless main shopping centre)

And the Towner Art Gallery.

ChicaneOvenchips · 23/07/2024 21:54

Torquay, Brixham, Dartmouth (you can even go to one of the filming locations of Poirot if you stay in this area: Greenway, which was Agatha Christies holiday home).

TheRozzers · 23/07/2024 21:56

West Wittering. Lovely, sandy beach and nearby Chichester to explore.

fruitypancake · 23/07/2024 21:56

Southbourne near Bournemouth or Christchurch v nice

lulugirl · 23/07/2024 21:59

Christchurch/Hengistbury Head or Dartmouth would get my votes.

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/07/2024 22:06

Lyme Regis or Sidmouth

LondonLovie · 23/07/2024 22:06

Camber and Rye

Whitstable

Hobbes8 · 23/07/2024 22:06

Do you mean South East coast? Whitstable is lovely but it’s not very westerly.

Whitstable isn't on the SW coast Confused.

Talkinpeace · 23/07/2024 22:08

Broadstairs
Lyme Regis
Bosham
Lymington
Woolacombe
Sidmouth

BasiliskStare · 23/07/2024 22:12

What is your budget ?

Roastiesarethebestbit · 23/07/2024 22:14

Weymouth. I found Dartmouth very dull
last time I went. Weymouth is better for a
wonder and it has the beach.

DilemmaDelilah · 24/07/2024 06:31

@lulugirl Whitstable couldn't be less West! Do you mean South East?

rubyslipperss · 24/07/2024 20:10

Ooh Lyme Regis !

@lulugirl that is why you may not have been getting the answers you may have been expecting! I live in the South West so little knowledge of the south east. Southsea is meant to be nice though, close to Portsmouth for shopping and close to the New Forest and South Downs/Surrey hills. Go a little further west and Bournemouth is nice.
