What phrases/sayings would nobody ever hear you say?

""Busy making memories" and "I tested positive for Covid".
Both sayings give me the biggest ick 🙈.

The first one is currently making me want to deactivate all my social media until everyone is finished "making memories" this summer holidays 😬😬😬

The Covid one, why do people say it like that? You'd never hear someone say "I tested positive for pregnancy".... whyyyyyy!!!!

Does anyone else have sayings that just really irritate them 🙈

Gonna - written or spoken
I get you (no you don’t, I'm not a raffle prize🧐)
its like this

LaMarschallin · 24/07/2024 08:04

I don't like or use the words "fart", "belly", "boobs" or "booze". I can swear like a trooper on occasion but hate the sound of those.
I also don't like the verbs "birthing/birthed" because to me it sounds like a farm animal producing offspring - much prefer "gave birth".

Likewhatever · 24/07/2024 08:14

Gifted, meaning given or gave drives me nuts, when did that start happening?

Also “Mama” makes me squirm for some reason.

LaMarschallin · 24/07/2024 08:20

Likewhatever

What about "Mama Bear"? <evil grin>

Sethera · 24/07/2024 08:22

'Beyond' in the phrases 'beyond angry' 'beyond obsessed'.

'The best' as in 'I had the best time'.

'Heartbeat' as in 'I'd move to France in a heartbeat'.

I imagine them said in an annoying, breathless, dramatic tone.

"Not gonna lie"
Well, that's a bloody relief.

That annoys me too. I always immediately interject with 'please don't'

sunglassesonthetable · 24/07/2024 08:34

This thread has just about covered most current slang and catch phrases going.

And 'going ' probably irritates.

" Teaching grandma to suck eggs"

That phrase just destroys me. I actually could barely write it

It's a horrible expression but does convey the message really well!

Another one I hate is "squeaky bum time". EEEUUUUUGGH.

I think the issue is when someone latches onto something and then everyone copies it and it's just a bit sad.

"Curated" for example. It used to be used in the sense of a museum collection and now it just means selected.

"Gifted" the same. Someone used it, someone else thought "oh I like that" and then everyone copied it. The nadir was Waitrose having a "Christmas gifting" aisle.

One that I thought was a fad back in the 00s was "space" in the sense of sector "eg in the retail space we struggle to recruit". But here we are 20 years later and it is still used all the time, so not a fad!

My husband keeps saying he's going to the quacks (GP) it's driving me quackers!

I agree with almost all the previous comments, but I can't bear to type them out.

My dad used to say that too. Is it a Lancashire expression or just from a certain era?

janeintheframe · 24/07/2024 09:26

For me, it’s two things.

calling yourself mummy to other adults when no children present. It really makes me cringe, and for some reason the word lush when not used about plants or trees. Particularly if it’s used about food, ie the pie was lush. I get it’s common use in some parts of the uk, but feels all wrong to me.

Famalam - anyone using that phrase should be shot

I have no idea what this even means!

Inspireme2 · 24/07/2024 09:51

Touch base
Game changer
It is what it is
I hope this finds you well - in a email, as a perimenpausal person I find that offensive 🤣

RaraRachael · 24/07/2024 09:57

Gives me the ick
Making memories
Boils my piss
Grinds my gears
I was today years old
Tell me you're X without telling me you're X

Probably loads more

Papergirl1968 · 24/07/2024 12:40

Sweet treats.
It makes me want to stab someone with a cake fork!

LaMarschallin · 24/07/2024 12:56

Also tabloid phrases like "X gives a sweet nod to Y" and "stepping out".
And I doubt I'll ever "flaunt my curves" even though I've actually got some now post-menopause.

Also "giving a leggy display"
"Packing on the PDA"and
"age defying looks" 🤑
Usually to describe Zlisters who've had work done.

You do you

Where do these idiotic sayings originate?

humptydumpty12 · 24/07/2024 13:09

Fur baby.

It is what it is.

And people (mainly Politicians saying "Listen" or "Look" at the start of a sentence.

Actors that have to keep saying "okay?" or "all right?" a the end of their lines to create a bit of 'space'. I think they are taught this at acting school.

GGRRRRRR

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 24/07/2024 09:38

I have no idea what this even means!

A "cute" word for family.

PaperbackWrighter · 10/08/2024 18:43

Let's jump on a call.

What, with two feet? Smash the phone?

AngelusBell · 10/08/2024 18:44

Hun

TheHistorian · 10/08/2024 19:23

Blue lighted as in 'I was blue lighted to hospital'. Unnecessarily over dramatic.

Andnowshesatoddler · 10/08/2024 19:30

Grab and go when refering to food as if everybody is so busy they need to 'grab'.

When retailers use over familiar language for example babes etc or pretend to be your friends I never click emails when I get that sort of tag line. I think I've described that horribly!
