I was in secondary school late 90s early 00s All the popular kids at my school carried their books around in Jane Norman carrier bags in Alevels they started to get cars.
I remember being so jealous of this Playboy choker necklace one of the girls had.

Very small cell phones/mobile phones. It was around 2002-2005, before smart phones were common, and it was cool to have a tiny flip phone in a fun colour.

😍 I had a tiny bright blue Sony Erickson flip phone, it was my pride and joy
We were really broke growing up and then just as I was leaving school my mum had retrained and got the job managing the nursery she'd started off part time at to suit our school hours in primary. I was thrilled until I drowned it with a leaking bottle of apple tango inside a Nike two strap drawstring bag. I really really cried

I can't remember any material things, but they definitely had an aura of 'I'm the best'

Looking back, they are the type of kids that the parents were afraid to say 'no' to and gave them all they wanted.

A fuck load of confidence

This. I was the saddo who had the exact school uniform, down to the a-line skirt and polyester shirt. Everyone thought I was being ironic because I have a massive ego.

menopausalhuman · 23/07/2024 20:44

late eighties: a yellow waterproof sony walkman, permed hair, doc martens,

VividQuoter · 23/07/2024 20:47

LOL, the good girls had virginity.

OriginalUsername2 · 23/07/2024 20:48

Kappa jackets.

Tisfortired · 23/07/2024 20:50

Clothes from Tammy, Topshop and New Look
GHD straighteners/nice hair
Jane Nor(man) bags
Flip phones (my parents eventually got me one when they were way out of fashion!)

It’s still a bit of a sore point for me that my parents let me go around dressed the way I did. My mum would buy me clothes that she would wear herself and I stuck out like a sore thumb at school in the 00s. I still have a complex about how I dress now and I’m 33 with grown up money!

Illpickthatup · 23/07/2024 20:53

Anyone remember kookai bags?

Late 80s/early 90s - Dash and Benetton tracksuits/t-shirts. Swatch pop-watches. Those big Head sports bags. Double-tape deck hi-fis that could record tape to tape. Holidays in Lanzarote and Florida. Glitter roller-ball makeup and perfumes. Hair crinkler tongs. A perm with a frizzy little gelled fringe. Dungarees. A dad with country club membership who could have birthday swimming parties. A Walkman. My best friend had all these things and I was insanely jealous. At least I got to go to the swimming parties and occasionally copy her tapes!

Those were the days! 😂

I left secondary school 13 years ago! The ‘Just do it’ backpack was definitely a status symbol.
As was a Blackberry phone, it was all about the BBM, an exclusive world. 😂 oh and iPods!! iPhones were becoming a big thing when I was in Year 11 but before then the iPod. The iPod touch being the coolest. I had an iPod shuffle which I’m not sure really counted as having an iPod.

When I was in primary school it was a tamagotchi, wheelies and shoes that had a doll hidden in them, I can’t remember what they were called. I remember everyone oooing and aaaing over those doll shoes. Oh how I used to plead, never got them.

BCBird · 23/07/2024 21:12

Sad wrapping paper? Growing up.in 80s we used wall paper. At least friends would know east to expect when thry came tound. Remember Kappa clothing being popular. Started teching mid 90s. Don't remrmber the Jane Norman bags

Ineedanewsofa · 23/07/2024 21:13

Kangol flat caps worn backwards, huge clumpy black shoes (Kickers or Pods), loads of Argos gold jewellery and a really tight perm, OR a tiny handbag with all books in a Ted Baker carrier bag, slightly less clumpy shoes, heart shaped studs from tiffany/a designer watch and poker straight hair. All the lads looked the same and dressed the same, popularity was linked solely to footballing ability!
