I was in secondary school late 90s early 00s All the popular kids at my school carried their books around in Jane Norman carrier bags in Alevels they started to get cars.
I remember being so jealous of this Playboy choker necklace one of the girls had.

A best friend. I was part of a small crowd and I don't think I would have made it onto anyone's best friend list.

Brand name sports wear for everyday clothes. I was never that bothered about it and couldn't afford it anyway!

A yellow and black Cat brand school bag, the kind with the long strap you wore across the body.

PurpleDreamCatcher · 23/07/2024 18:02

GAP and Benetton stuff.
Swatch watches.
Barbour jackets.
Vans and general skater wear.

West Midlands in the 80s:

Benetton or Chelsea Girl carrier bags
Very long pleated skirts, usually white
Tight Farahs, on boys and girls
VW badges on braces that hung down behind
AquaScutum jackets and scarves
Head bags
Kouros aftershave (I had some so not just the boys)
Lilac shimmer eyeliner
Frosted lipstick
I don't know what the name of these shoes was but we called them daisy boots? Flat round toed sandals (white) with cutout daisies, like a doily. I have never been able to find a picture and would love to know if anyone else remembers them!

Offforatwix · 23/07/2024 18:03

CAT record bags (the digger company)
Kickers brown deck shoes then moved onto pod shoes.
Kangol hats
Shag bands

PerkyMintDeer · 23/07/2024 18:04

Funny...I had a lot of the previously mentioned material things but got bullied!

I'd agree with fuck loads of confidence.

But also at my school;

Hands off parents
A spot on the first hockey or netball team

Baby G or Storm Watch
Kookai or Morgan Bag
Smash Hits Subscription
Platform Trainers (Fila, Ellesse etc)
Pagers then Nokia Mobiles
Mums who drove convertible sports cars with personal registrations
Inflatable furniture
Lava lamps
Kangol bucket hats
Belly button rings
An obsession with banal bubblegum pop music

aardvarkpark · 23/07/2024 18:04

And Tommy girl perfume!

Offforatwix · 23/07/2024 18:05

Adidas trousers for almost a decade too .then it morphed into le coq sportif and then eventually fizzled out.

ListeningCurve · 23/07/2024 18:07

Puma bags and chopper bikes.

FrenchMustard · 23/07/2024 18:09

Did the daisy boots have a wide strap that fastened with a popper, a cut out daisy in the middle of the toe with petal shapes and circles cut out around the daisy, @SoManyBadgers? I loved mine so much that my mum bought me a second pair and dyed them black to wear to school 😂

SoManyBadgers · 23/07/2024 18:16

@BobandRobertaSmith YES! I'm so glad someone remembers them!

I got a new pair of kickers for starting 1st year at high school in 1999.

Hmm, misreading can conjuor (sp) some interesting images… not kickers but knickers!

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 23/07/2024 18:17

Its not that they were popular but that they had more money. Those who had money went for Benneton gear, FCUK clothes and branded trainers.

I was into indie stuff so fortunately it was way cheaper.

Late 80s, early 90s.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/07/2024 18:18

Going back to the 70s - an adidas mac and/or bag and moccasins.
And a scruff cut.

Harvestmoon49 · 23/07/2024 18:18

I was at secondary in the mid to late 80s - it was hell on earth if you weren't popular (I wasn't!)

All the popular girls had head bags and boyfriends from our cities rugby club who picked them up in fancy cars 😳
I look back now and think wtf? This was in plain sight of teachers and we all envied them!

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 23/07/2024 18:23

A friend had a playboy themed bedroom and we thought it was brilliant.
I had some kickers shoes for school in 1994 and 1995. Thought I was the coolest kid ever.
I had a perm in 1996. During that summer I had these long wrap around maxi skirts with flowery patterns on. Pedal pushers too. Kappa trousers with poppers open. Oh the horror when I look back.
Edit: completely gone off topic.

wastingtimeonhere · 23/07/2024 18:25

1970s
Chopper bike
Adidas bag

I wasn't in the popular kids group.

pinkdelight · 23/07/2024 18:26

Also, briefly, snoods.

Coldbeerneverbrokemyheart · 23/07/2024 18:28

The ridiculously wide skate shoes and jeans, backpack slung ridiculously low. I didn’t have any of this and was so envious! Skate/grungy culture was the very in thing at my school.

One own clothes day a girl in my class brought in a full set of jeans, skate shoes and a skate T-shirt and said I could have them “as they didn’t fit her anymore” but clearly looking back it was I lived with my gran and she couldn’t afford to keep me in the trends. Her mum and her clearly decided to gift me them and it was absolutely lovely.

Autumnpleases · 23/07/2024 18:29

Oh yes Baby G watches and shag bands 😂

RomanticOutlaws · 23/07/2024 18:34

yarnwitch · 23/07/2024 17:18

Mid 90's was Naff Naff jackets and The Body Shop cotton bags.
Late 90's/00's was Jane Norman carrier bags, Yin/Yang symbols, black cord necklaces with a pendant, 'shag band' bracelets, and Pod or Kickers school shoes.

Naff Naff! Holy shit what a memory. 😂

SkaneTos · 23/07/2024 18:40

Very small cell phones/mobile phones. It was around 2002-2005, before smart phones were common, and it was cool to have a tiny flip phone in a fun colour.

leeverarch · 23/07/2024 18:40

Chopper bikes, space hoppers, clackers and Afghan coats.

CordylineCapybara · 23/07/2024 18:45

Coconutter24 · 23/07/2024 16:48

Jane Norman drawstring bag, a pair of Rockports, a gold clown necklace

Omg I'd forgotten about those clown necklaces
