A very good looking man has sent me a friend request on FB

I don't know who he is, he only has 2 friends, so I assume it's all fake. Obviously the picture isn't real, but is it likely to be a real person behind the account or a bot?

What's the scam? What are they hoping to get from me?

He really is dreamy to look at 😆

I get this quite a lot. They are usually "doctors" or in the military and look like George Clooney...

That's exactly the description of one who contacted me recently. I was off work sick so played along but got bored too quickly

In 4 days he had asked me where I grew up, my fave food, fave colour (surprised he never asked Mums maiden name) and fallen in love with the fake photo I sent him. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with 'me'

He was widowed had a mansion in Beverley Hills, was a medic in Iraq with funnily enough a son at a boarding school in Scotland.

It started off entertaining but he wasn't enough of a conversationist to keep it going

leeverarch · 23/07/2024 16:57

They aren't always American, I've had one or two gun-toting South Africans in camouflage gear, grinning at the lens over some carcass. Still doctors and ex-high-ranking army though.

No ta.

Stereofind · 23/07/2024 17:04

Wow, it looks like the pictures have been doing the rounds under various names for about 10 years.

The picture is presumably of a real person somewhere though?

It is tempting, but then my friends will think I'm potentially that stupid 🤣

It would be fun to see how long it took him to fall in love with you though.

So, is there any risk to me of accepting him and then unfriending him in a few days?

I shall be most offended if he doesn't fall in love with me 🤣

Yeah I get the same thing, I've been tempted to go along with it when I've been bored to see what they say but haven't done it yet

TaylorSwish · 23/07/2024 17:43

Have a look at Daisy May Cooper and her romance with the sea captain/scammer. It’s really funny.

Ahhhmarsbar · 23/07/2024 19:29

I accepted a couple on Instagram because there's hardly anything on there about me not my name or anything. I played along for entertainment telling them I was loaded and single having lost my husband in a tragic accident. It gets boring though lol, I think they follow a script

IncessantNameChanger · 23/07/2024 19:33

With online dating my friend had lots of interest from younger men. They was local so real. After experienced woman. If they live down the road they are just randy. The scammers, are always working overseas

I think it is safe unless you have a lot of personal information on FB

JoJothegerbil · 23/07/2024 19:41

My mum got conned out of £12k from one of these scammers. Scammer told her he worked for the UN in Africa and was going to come over and marry her. As an old, vulnerable and lonely widow she was a prime target and she fell for it. Fortunately the scammers (a couple of Nigerian students) very unusually got caught, imprisoned then deported. Mum got her money back too.

Google image search the photo.

I've had a hat trick of surgeons recently, in their scrubs and everything! No dogs though, might have worked with a dog

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2024 19:49

Chat to him but don't add him

See how far it will go

Ive had a few widowed friends request me over the months. I ignore

I heard a radio programme a few years ago and they had tracked down this man whose image had been used several times.

He was a British man, with his own business, quite successful. The scam had got interest from a good few women, but he was actually gay. He had done a lot of stuff online, for his business, can't remember all the details. He was absolutely legit and very shocked and upset to find his image had been used in this way.

Cloverforever · 23/07/2024 20:11

I had this when I was online dating. A very sexy French man started messaging me - reverse image search subsequently said otherwise.

He phoned me unexpectedly in the middle of the night when I was helping at the girl guides jamboree, sharing a tent with two other ladies. It certainly provided some amusement!

TheShiningCarpet · 23/07/2024 20:16

Often have badly phrased cliches in profile like “god bless this life’s” “just lookin for the one”

I don't.

I must be really pug ugly
😭😭😭

Addendum
Make a similar but fake FB then let them entertain you.
Ask them for money

Sometimes they want to launder some cash and will ask to use your account. Should that happen, hie thee to the bank and get an account the police can play with.

(Edited for sausage fingers. Again!)

Tell them you're into aardvarks and see what they come up with.

BasilParsley · 23/07/2024 20:39

Although I'm divorced (which I originally had my FB profile set to), I quickly realised that I was being spammed by advertisers (to join dating sites) and nefarious people (love bombing and then asking for financial help etc. etc.).So, I have changed my profile on FB to "in a relationship" even though it's a lie - but it's done the trick!

ginandbearit · 23/07/2024 20:44

An elderly gay friend was taken in by exactly the same thing, photos of a handsome young American serviceman, my friend was devastated when we explained what it was , and he'd already given a few thousand pounds. So sad and evil.

Soditsally · 23/07/2024 20:54

I wasted an hour once describing my elbow bunion to one and how debilitating it was when all I wanted was spaghetti on toast but couldn't open the tin

I then told him my gas and electric had been cut off and I needed money to visit my 2 sons in prison and could he help me out

I only felt comfortable asking as we obviously had such a connection

Brilliant. Did they just disappear at that point?

I replied to one of these guys once for a laugh but it got boring quickly. None of the people operating the account could speak or write beyond the most basic English (it was multiple people evidently as there was no continuity) and couldn't even respond to obvious questions, just kept repeating that I was beautiful and they loved me and they wanted to marry me. 🙄 I have no idea how they were supposed to get anywhere unless they found an exceptionally lonely women who spoke some rudimentary English as a secondary language and couldn't see how bad their English skills were.

I told mine that my husband neglected me because of his obsession with taxidermy and that right now he was stuffing a beaver. 😄
