I'm doing a level 3 in health and social care and I'm really struggling with plagiarism. I sit and write my answer to questions then I use grammerly to check all good so far. My tutor has asked me to use small tools to check as well. Latest piece of work came back 16 per cent so I went onto it again and changed wording now its saying 18 per cent left it and checked again now its saying 21 per cent when I hadnt changed anything else grammerly is saying 4 per cent. I don't know what to do ive only written about tasks we complete at work for infection control. Has anyone got any ideas. I write in my own words help me please before I give up oh and tutor has said there 30 per cent plagiarism when she checked

Have you used any wording from infection control documentation/policies? If you have these should be referenced even if you have written them in your own words and not used quotations.

are the sentences that are plagiarised highlighted when you check them? If so are you able to change these bits? It’s sounds very frustrating, it’s a shame your tutor is unable to offer more support.

can you try a different checker? When I was at uni we used turn it in but I don’t know if this is free.

DontBiteTheCat · 22/07/2024 21:17

Are you referencing the sources that you’re using?

I manage Assessors on this qualification. We have found that plagiarism checkers pick up 'common' words in work that cannot be changed because they are technical jargon, ie, legislation, work based words and phrases etc. I would have a chat with your Tutor/Assessor and get their stance; ask them if their establishment has a preferred plagiarism checker in order to create a standardised approach, then from there, check your score again and if it's still showing as plagiarised, ask your Assessor to contact the External Verifier from the Awarding Body to see what they say, as ultimately, it is down to their discretion and decision what percentage passes. Good luck!

No I would have to pay for small tools to see exactly what sentences etc ive paid for grammerly that was 120 pounds but its not finding any plagiarism only 4 per cent. Its so frustrating I cant afford to pay for another plagiarism checker tutor keeps saying write in your own words and I am

Your establishment should have a preferred plagiarism checker that they use across the board for all qualifications - this creates a standardised approach and a benchmark for qualifications. Do you know the awarding body of your qualification? If you're struggling, you could go on their website and read their guidance.

Who is your qualification through? If it's through an online provider, not all are supportive

It's learning curve

Definitely shouldn’t have to pay. Grammarly isn’t for plagiarism though as far as I know, it’s a style checker first and foremost. If you write in your own words and reference your sources, there’s no way there’s going to be a 30% match with existing texts.

merryandbrightdelight · 22/07/2024 22:29

Had a feeling you might say them. I know people who have signed up for qualifications with them and have received their certificate through the door when they've still got one or two units outstanding!

Is there a local provider you can do it through near you? With it being a level 3 it's currently fully funded through the free courses for jobs scheme for most LAs. Most places now offer distance learning too, so as long as you have a placement to be assessed for occupational competency, you will be fine

I checked it it was 7 per cent im wondering if tutor put everything into the checker including references and thats why it's jumped to 30 per cent
