Colour braces on NHS?

Has anyone's DC had standard NHS train track style braces recently and been able to choose colours for the pieces on their teeth?

My DD is having hers this week and we've been told only traditional metal, but she's sure some friends have been able to choose the coloured pieces for theirs.

I know it might vary but just wondered if there was a guideline that said no.

You can choose the coloured elastic bands ( tiny) that go round the metal brackets

BrieAndChilli · 22/07/2024 17:02

I currently have 2 children with train track braces on the NHS. The bit stuck to their teeth and the wire are metal but they are able to choose the colour of the bands each time they go.
I do not know if the metal 'pieces' stuck on the teeth can be different colours eg white but would assume that would only be an option with private dental work

My son had coloured bits on, NHS, Leeds

My son got his replaced today with lovely pale blue brackets(he got to choose), the previous ones were dark blue - nhs in Yorkshire

Over 10 years ago, I had braces on th NHS, and I didn't have the elastic bands on the train tracks. They were a different type that the wire pushed straight into the bracket. I was told ahead of them been fitted that this would be the case, and they would be just metal no picking colours.
I was told at the time they were quite new, but seemingly them may still be used but not widely.

Yes, DS was asked if he wanted to choose a colour. He said no, he just wanted plain metallic ones. They had a selection of different colours he could have chosen from, on the NHS.

Can choose the coloured elastics hth

MWestie · 22/07/2024 17:14

Thanks all, that's really interesting.

I've looked online and always thought it was all metal and stuck to the teeth, like little pads.
But there are bands round these that can have different colours, even at the front, like the pink ones here?

When I called the practice to query they said straight away all metal, no colours.

Thanks, do you mean elastics at the front?
I've seen stretchy elastic bands over top and bottom teeth at the back, but wanted to know more about the front teeth, is that what you mean?

Our hospital does metal braces, and st each appointment the kids choose the coloured elastics that go on each bracket.
My boy normally says clear pls as he doesn't want colours.

I had the metal ones and yes the tiny elastic bands can be coloured.

Having worn mine for 2.5 years and had several friends with them, I have two recommendations:

Don't get yellow. My school colours were yellow and black and kids would get that. Yellow can look really weird and gross.

Don't get clear. If you want a neutral look get grey ones to blend to the metal. Clear ones don't stay clear and can become yellowed.

These are the bands that go around the metal brackets that people are describing

When my Dd had braces they advised what colours looked best. As a pp said yellow doesn't look good. The coloured part is the elastics though, the actual brace doesn't come in colours I don't think, at least we wasn't offered any options.

DanceMumTaxi · 22/07/2024 18:19

Yes, dd has bright pink. There was a range of colours to choose from. We’re in Lancashire.

Ames74 · 22/07/2024 18:23

Plain metal for my DD too, but she chooses different colour elastic bands every appointment 🙂

MWestie · 22/07/2024 21:11

Thanks all for the replies. Seems so strange we've been told no colours. Was hoping might make it more bearable for my DD😬

These are the kind that I had on the NHS. Article explains how they work compared to traditional fixed braces that have elastics.

MWestie · 23/07/2024 13:40

Thanks @OtterAnimagus, those do sound effective but think my DD is having the traditional ones.
