Have you got an airfryer?

I've been sucked in with the reels on Insta, the food always looks quick and amazing.

It would be a sacrifice to find thr space for one, so I'm torn. Do you have one? Is it a fad or do you use it regularly? Any particular recommendations?

The drawers don't fit in the sink very well for washing and each one would take up far too much space in the dishwasher so can't go in there.

Squirt of washing up liquid in the drawers, add hot water, scrub with brush/sponge. Quick wipe of the outside.

The drawer is the sink!

@MasterShardlake thanks, I'll have a look.

Nat6999 · 22/07/2024 12:21

Yes, the Ninja dualzone, I'm thinking of swapping to the 11 in 1 multicooker.

gleefulstar · 22/07/2024 13:30

Love mine. Hardly use the oven now so it's saved me a fortune over the last couple of years.

Salmon and chicken cook beautifully in there. So do sausages and bacon. As does all the junk food that the DC like to eat.

belge2 · 22/07/2024 13:35

Have had one for a few years now. It's brilliant and gets used almost daily. Don't think of it as frying things- it's basically a small, very efficient oven. I made flapjacks in mine yesterday - heats up in 1 min and much more energy efficient than putting on large oven for 1 small item. Kids (all young adults ) use it frequently and bought one for son at Uni.

Ohdosodoffdear · 22/07/2024 13:38

Wow, so much love for the airfryer! I'm convinced. There's just so much choice though, which model do I need? There's 2 adults and 2 young dc, I like the idea of being able to cook a while chicken in there. I'm not much for baking so don't need the extra functionality to do cakes etc. It'll be mostly a meat / fish + potato combo.

I resisted buying an air fryer for yonks, believing it to be a fad and something that would be relegated to the drawer of useless appliances very quickky. But upon purchasing a double drawer one in the sale, I can happily say I was totally wrong! It's fab for freezer food but I don't eat much of that - I use mine for pork steaks, fish fillets, chicken thighs, home made koftas etc. Roasted carrots and asparagus are especially nice when drizzled with olive oil and sea salt. My only recommendation is to always get the largest version, I can't see the point of the 1_ drawer tiny ones, you'd get nothing in there!

MiddleAgedDread · 22/07/2024 13:44

I've just been sucked into buying one but so far I'm quite impressed. I was hesitant because I thought they were really for "frying" things which I never do but it's been great for roasting veg, jacket potatoes, heated a shop bought lasagne really quickly. It's a bit quicker than cooking things in the oven but the benefit is that it doesn't need time to heat up and it's not making the kitchen hot in this warmer weather. I don't find washing it an issue, the drawers fit in the sink fine. I don't understand how people are baking in them? Do you fit a baking tin inside it?

LlamaNoDrama · 22/07/2024 14:08

I resisted for ages as they seem very marmite but we use it daily and hardly put the oven on anymore (mainly just for pizza or when I bake as I batch bake).

We do nuggets etc in it and it's so much quicker (ARFID child here).

I also do loads of our food in it. I do chicken fajita mix, roasted veg, roast dinner I just use the airfryer and do veg on the hob. Pizza chicken, baked potatoes, wedges, Hm chips, roasties, I haven't tried fish in it but it would prob on,y take literally a few mins if fresh. So much quicker and cheaper than waiting for the oven to warm up and be on for 20/30 mins for one or two items. I chuck part baked rolls/baguettes in, garlic bread, can reheat leftovers in it. Cheese toasties. Toasted wraps.

sagalooshoe · 22/07/2024 14:09

I bought a tiny one (2L) and I've found it really useful for all the things that would be crazy to put a whole oven on for: hash browns to go with a fry up, quickly crisping up a couple of microwaved jacket spuds, my sons fishcakes to go with his boiled pots and veg. It's really good for reheating things that would go soggy in a microwave: sausage rolls, pies etc

It heats up to 200 C in 2 minutes and cooks things twice as fast too.

MerelyPlaying · 22/07/2024 14:11

I’m getting some great inspiration here - going to have to try blistering peppers, roasted new potatoes and cheese on toast! My toaster has just broken, and it genuinely never occurred to me that I could toast bread in the air fryer 🤦‍♀️

like others on here I resisted at first, but I love mine. Great for roasted Mediterranean veg, mushrooms, wedges etc - I have done hard-boiled eggs but it’s easiest to do them in my pressure cooker. Main reason for me having one is that I’m single, I don’t have to heat a whole oven for a single portion of fish, chicken etc. I almost always cook from scratch. I got an Instant Vortex Plus, just one drawer. Specially chosen because I can put it in the cupboard when it’s not in use.

Washing up is easy, as someone else said the drawer is the sink! Squirt of washing up liquid, hot water and it takes moments to clean.

Crazycrazylady · 22/07/2024 14:39

Our electricity bill has massively come down since we got it. Rarely use oven bow. Everything is better and quicker in air fryer. We have ninja .

ABirdsEyeView · 22/07/2024 10:58

I thought the Duronic one from Amazon - it comes with the two 5l draws and a large 10l drawer. Was much cheaper than the ninja. I love it. The thermostat in my oven has just gone, so removed the oven and not bothered to replace it.
I still use my electric hob a lot, but not missing the oven at all.
I line the drawers with tin foil if I've run out of liners, which reduces mess.

If you cut a round pizza in half you can still get both halves in the big drawer or get the rectangle pizzas.

I've roasted chicken in mine, made a banana loaf, yy to frozen pain au chocolat.

I also have a small kitchen with cabinets above the work tops so I bought one that does slide underneath. I put it where my microwave went, so haven't lost counter space - just put the microwave where my built in oven was.
I'm going to gut my kitchen so will get a new oven at some point, but in the meantime the air fryer has been fab.

I'm currently looking at this one. Have you found any sillicon liners to fit it? Would you reccomend it for a family of 5? Although mealtimes are often staggered.

PerkyMintDeer · 22/07/2024 15:18

Just by means of an update of how it can be used on a day to day basis...

I've previously mentioned I have a ninja speedi.

Just before lunch, I realised I had a lots of veg in the fridge chopped up, needing used:

On the crisper tray, in a liner, I popped sweet potato, a red pepper and some mushrooms on airfry mode for 15 mins.

Once done, I removed the tray and took that out entirely. Switched on "saute" mode, fried up onions, garlic, ginger and some curry spices for 5 minutes then added some dried red lentils and a stock cube and boiling water and the roasted veg. Flipped switch over to "speedi meals" and cooked until lentils were done then blended the whole thing into a curried vegetable soup...took around 30 mins in total.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/07/2024 15:35

I use mine loads. Only thing I don't use it for is pizza as it doesn't fit.

That is exactly what we do. Even with it only half full of hot, soapy water it slops everywhere. I guess I just don't want something else that takes up valuable worktop space and needs cleaned regularly.

I've accepted that it is there now but mostly just DD and her boyfriend use it, so they have to clean it. Mostly. We do help each other out sometimes too.

PNDshame · 22/07/2024 16:20

I wasn't convinced...then I got one, and 1.5 years on I've probably used my oven a handful of times! Couldn't be without it now

Comedycook · 22/07/2024 16:21

I have two! I go weeks without using my oven. Use my air fryers every day

PrincessPeache · 22/07/2024 16:22

I have a ninja foodi and it’s used daily, wouldn’t be without one now!

ABirdsEyeView · 22/07/2024 17:33

@MightyGoldBear I have struggled to find silicone liners for the big drawer, as they are designed for the ninja. But I've been using tin foil and it's been fine.

Mimilamore · 22/07/2024 17:47

Cheese on sourdough with worchester sauce in mine. I just put bread in toaster first to toast the back and then add the topping, 5 mins and no mess...

MeinKraft · 22/07/2024 18:08

Yes I very rarely use the oven now. It's great for things like heating up croissants, naan bread etc it leave bread softer than the oven and literally has it ready in 1-2 minutes. Air fryer bacon is a cut above fried or grilled bacon too, it's delicious.

Takoneko · 22/07/2024 18:23

I was another one who resisted because I thought they were for fried stuff, which we don’t really cook much.

I feel like air fryer is the wrong name for them. They are really just little fan ovens.

I cook pretty much anything that I used to put in the oven in the air fryer except pizzas or when we’re cooking for a crowd and the oven needs to go on anyway.

One of my favourite things to do in the air fryer are little bites of pork belly with a sticky Asian glaze on, amazing with rice and fresh pickled veg.

GinAndBeerIt · 22/07/2024 18:30

I have a large 9ltr one, which is cooking two chicken breasts as I type.
Mine lives in my now almost defunct split level oven and it's used almost daily, including cooking bacon in it.
If on the rare occasion I want to use the oven, I just remove it and put it on the counter until the oven has cooled enough to put it back in.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/07/2024 18:32

Yup, two, one with the pressure cooker/slow cooker functions, one double. Still cheaper than buying a cheap oven and paying for somebody to tear the kitchen apart to remove the old, non working oven and connect a replacement.
