What do you have for breakfast (Uk\Us)

isitfridaay · 21/07/2024 22:09

I have one slice of toast or a bowl of cereal (cornflakes shreddies porridge in winter)

About 5 times a year crumpets or. Croissant / cinnamon bun.

Do people have cooked breakfast everyday?

Inspired by watching re run of ER (the whole thing from pilot to end, currently s6 ep 22) A few innocent lines of reference to breakfasts which I have read too much into )

All those who don’t eat breakfast — aren’t you ridiculously thin?

I’m naturally slim and if I skipped a whole meal like this I’d be underweight.

Not a stealth boast, I’m just very curious how you get enough calories in if you only eat two meals a day. Do you eat very large dinners? Are you underweight?

Nope, I'm about 20lbs overweight, although quite strong and active.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 22/07/2024 12:28

US (NYC): Weekdays I usually have coffee and a protein bar while I get the children ready for school and daycare. It's always a mad scramble to get out of the apartment.

Weekends are usually coffee and a bagel, although I skip the bagel if I'm doing a morning workout class.

I’m wondering whether intermittent fasting (which this effectively is) actually works then?

People seem to think it does but I guess it depends on what you eat for the rest of the day?

Sorry, not meaning to derail the thread. Just interested!

Mon-Sat I'd typically have a large scoop of full fat greek yog with frozen bilberries and chopped nuts / seeds plus a coffee with milk.
Sundays are almost always a bacon roll. Small low carb or wholemeal roll with lots of butter and piled high with bacon. No lunch and an earlier dinner. 😀

TheMauveTiger · 22/07/2024 14:04

Greek yoghurt, porridge oats with mixed nuts and a chopped apple and kiwi fruit or pear.
Or 2 poached eggs on sourdough.

I love Mumsnet for this: think of a niche random question that you want to know the answer to from many people; ask it on Mumsnet and, ta-da, 24 hour later I know that most people have cereal or toast.

Thanks!

UK here. Half the week I have a bowl of Special K, and a ham and cheese toasted bagel with my coffee. The other half I swap the cereal for 2 slices of potato bread.

On Sundays I make French toast.

This weekend we had treat breakfasts - I batted my eyelids and got husband to make me banana pancakes with syrup, then the next day I made a full English. Tasted amazing but I spent a few hours feeing like my heart was about to implode!

I’m average weight (despite my username)
I usually do still eat 3 times a day, my first meal just isn’t until about midday, then a snack or small meal when I get home from work and dinner later.

henlake7 · 22/07/2024 23:12

UK.
First early breakfast is shredded wheat, plant milk and prunes.
Second late breakfast is oats, grated apple, protein powder, nut butter, and berries.

(I also have a third breakfast of berries, soya yoghurt and granola as a bedtime snack....I love me some breakie!!).
Somehow Ive lost 7 and a half stone like this so I dont think intermittant fasting makes much of a difference, its all calories in vs out surely?

No, I'm mid fifties, menopausal, very underactive thyroid so I've gained about half a stone over the last few years.

I'm 5ft 3" and weigh bang on 9 stone but have never been underweight.

elp30 · 23/07/2024 01:26

I'm a Mexican-American from Texas.

Breakfasts in my house are usually something wrapped in a flour tortilla or a taco, made with fresh corn tortillas.

Today, I had scrambled egg with tomatoes, onion and cheese in flour tortillas with a spicy green chile salsa. Yesterday, I had a refried bean burrito with shredded cabbage, tomatoes, onion, cheese and guacamole. Tomorrow, I'll probably eat a Mexican chorizo (it's not cured like Spanish chorizo) and egg burrito with a spicy red salsa.

I have an English husband. He can't handle breakfast and usually has toast and marmalade.

OhcantthInkofaname · 23/07/2024 02:35

US here

  1. Overnight oats with fruit and yogurt.
  2. Bagel with flavored whipped cream cheese spread.
  3. Breakfast egg, cheese, and sausage biscuit.
  4. Waffles or pancakes with soft boiled egg.

interesting thread @isitfridaay

I’m also interested to know exactly what you think you’ve read too much into?

I can only speak from my experience but intermittent fasting doesn't help me to lose weight unless I also look at the calories I'm consuming within my eating window. You can't just eat whatever you like in those eating hours and lose weight.

However. Even without changing what I'm eating and just sticking to 16 to 18 hours a day of fasting, although I haven't really lost weight other health markers have improved. E.g my blood pressure and cholesterol have both gone down. I also feel great and clear headed. So for me there are other benefits to intermittent fasting rather than simply weight loss. But it does help with cutting out evening snacking!

Just because people don’t eat breakfast it doesn’t mean they’re intermittent fasting. They’re not doing 16:8 ‘properly’ iyswim.

My own personal experience is that the daily IF is good for weight maintenance, if you want to lose weight 5:2 is the best method.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 24/07/2024 16:37

Mostly toast with ham. Cooked breakfast is very rare, if I am away I would choose eggs benedict over a fry up. Sometimes have eggs on toast if I am just back from the gym.

Can't do cereals, they don't fill me up. Not a porridge fan.

Objectrelations · 24/07/2024 19:19

A 600g pot of soya yogurt with a spoonful of hemp protein powder to make it a wonderful green colour and either berries or crudites

Tisfortired · 24/07/2024 19:33

Most of the time it’s cereal, usually rice crispies, cheerios or cornflakes. With some toast, sometimes with jam sometimes not. Now and again I’ll have Greek yoghurt and fruit instead of cereal.

Once a week ish we might have a bacon sandwich or the like. About once a month I’ll buy crumpets or potato cakes, and maybe every 6 weeks or so I’ll make pancakes as DS1 loves them. I also occasionally buy the Pret A Manger frozen pastries as a treat, usually around birthdays or Christmas.

I absolutely love breakfast, it’s my favourite meal of the day even when it is just rice crispies and toast.

Fontainebleau007 · 24/07/2024 19:36

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but was searching for breakfast / brunch ideas because don't have much of an appetite. However, seem to be up for eating in the morning but can't be arsed to make eggs, Toast - even ready made crumpets! @elp30 yummy Tortillas, Salsa, Avocado resonated with me as something you could prep a couple of days in advance and would keep; just heat up ready made Tortilla in the morning. A Tamale would be a step too far in the morning . . . As a kid, I never had breakfast during the school week. I wouldn't even dare put the kettle on because my mother would start yelling where was her Tea - which involved leaves (no Teabags for her) and I would have to clean up the detritus after. Our neighbour would cook up a full English for her Kids and husband - I was so jealous! It must have been quite pricey; even back in ye olde days when there was nothing but fields yonder . . .

Thevelvelletes · 01/12/2024 06:42

I'm having black pudding softies today mmmm.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/12/2024 06:47

Weekdays it’s yogurt, fruit, flaxseed, walnuts, drizzle of honey. Or a smoothie with some protein in.

Weekends it’s cooked breakfast like a healthy ‘fry’ up or shakshuka or the like.

but now I really want hot buttered toast.

Pamosonic · 01/12/2024 07:21

Weekdays: a yoghurt
Weekends: scrambled egg/beans on toast

These people who don’t eat breakfast - how early do you wake up? Can’t imagine anyone getting up with kids at 6am then having nothing to eat until lunch at 12:30, that’s over six hours! Is this real?

Yes I often don’t get hungry until mid day.

other times I’m starving by 10 am.

im up at half five or six most mornings for work

i only eat when I’m hungry 🤷‍♀️.

edited to say I didn’t realise this was an old thread, sorry for quoting you 😂. It’s so annoying when people do this
