Random question about concerts and vomit

Sorry to ask here but need a reasonably big sample size!
Lucky enough to have tickets for a big concert this summer for me, a friend, dd & her friend.
Unfortunately dd has a severe phobia of vomit-enough to have significant impact on her life & school. We are seeing CAMHS but progress is slow and if anything she’s worse now than when I booked tickets.
She was nervous enough about going to the concert in the first place but has now managed to see videos on tiktok of people throwing up at other concerts and now she’s saying she can’t go.
I’ve been to a few concerts and can’t remember anyone being sick but she is on constant alert for it.
She’s said that maybe she could go if I promised to take her out if anyone was sick but she doesn’t want to spoil it for me.
I could easily sell her and her friend’s tickets but would be sad for them to miss out (especially the friend!)
So what I’m asking is what are the chances of someone being sick at a concert (where the target audience is teenage girls)?
And should I promise to take her out if it happens on the basis that it probably won’t or just give up on her going.

(I will add that I’m a bigger fan than her so will be going with my friend regardless!)

I've been to many a concert and never seen that! Maybe what she's seen are at venues where a lot of alcohol is consumed? I would reassure her that'll you'll take her out if it happens but have everything crossed that it'll be fine, which it very likely will!

MuthaHubbard · 21/07/2024 20:45

I've been to loads of concerts (6 in the past year and loads before that) and I don't recall seeing anyone being sick. Seen a few tipsy people being a bit wobbly. Even when in the loos, don't recall hearing anyone throwing up.

DogsAndKidsAndSport · 21/07/2024 20:46

I’ve been to a few concerts with my DDs and never seen anyone being sick. Hope your daughter feels confident to go 💐

Depends on who she's going to see and where. If it's a teen type thing with no alcohol sold, very little chance. It's more likely for when you leave at an 11pm curfew and then head to the pubs & past the kebab shops in a city venue, rather than a more controlled, alcohol free venue that's out of the way.

NoraLuka · 21/07/2024 20:48

I’ve seen people being sick at festivals after drinking for 3 days straight, but never at concerts.

TheBizzies · 21/07/2024 20:49

She must be searching for
it - I have never seen it in real life.

memoriesofamiga · 21/07/2024 20:49

I go to concerts at least once a month, often more, and I've only seen someone sick once in the toilets - granted this was a middle age woman and I do metal gigs where most attendees are middle aged men, so not the demographic you're looking at. But even so I'd say that someone being sick is rare in the venue itself.

Swiftexit · 21/07/2024 20:50

This is reassuring!
There will be alcohol I’m sure but I wouldn’t have thought it would be excessive.

Not since the 80s. Nobody chokes to death on their own vomit at concerts these days. If you get too drunk, you will likely get kicked out before it spirals to that point.

FatmanandKnobbin · 21/07/2024 20:51

I've never seen someone be sick at a concert and I've been to hundreds over the last 30 years.

Festivals on the other hand.....

WinterMorn · 21/07/2024 20:56

Have been going to concerts for 40 years and have never seen anyone throw up.

Witchbitch20 · 21/07/2024 20:56

So she’s searching TikTok for people being sick at concerts? Maybe limiting access to that app would be a good place to start.

Never seen or known anyone who’s thrown up in a concert.

Wonkywinky · 21/07/2024 20:57

I have emmetophobia and get this completely.
Once the seed is sown it's V hard to think with any rationality
I can highly recommend sertraline for emmetophobia it's not " cured " me but made life so much easier

I've been to a lot of concerts and never seen people be sick. Just out of interest how does she handle if she's sick herself?

She hasn’t been sick for over 10 years. She has a panic attack if she feels slightly nauseous.
She’s said herself that if she did actually throw up herself it would probably help her fear but also says that she’d rather die 🤦‍♀️

The booze is so expensive at concerts I don't think most would drink to mega excess

Pinkpurpleblue1 · 21/07/2024 21:06

I’ve never seen anyone that’s been sick at a concert but I do understand your daughter’s worries / that way of thinking. I had emetophobia which is the fear of being sick from around age 6 to around age 25. I wouldn’t say I’m 100% ‘cured’ I hate being sick myself but I know I’ll feel better once I’ve been sick and I’m ok with others being sick now. I did hypnotherapy which helped me but also just getting older and becoming a parent I’ve fortunately been a lot better with it. When I was younger I would do anything to avoid it, I would limit any situations where I thought someone might be sick, it’s very irrational to those without the phobia but for that person it’s truely petrifying. If I was my younger self I’d tell her, go and have a great time and have a back up plan incase (though very very unlikely) have a back up plan and that it’s totally ok to leave. Sometimes the thought of no back up plan or feeling trapped makes the feeling worse x

Thefanofdoom · 21/07/2024 21:07

I've seen it the grand total of once. Very recently actually. But it was in a standing crowd, they were clearly shit faced and had been drinking all day by the looks of it. Didn't help that the air con in the venue didn't seem to be working.

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/07/2024 21:10

I haven't seen anyone be sick at a concert since the 90s, when I was a teenager and alcohol was cheaper. And I've been to hundreds of gigs.

Statistically speaking, emetophobes are less likely to vomit than people without the phobia. This might be a cause of the phobia (ie a fear of the unknown - I have pretty severe emetophobia and have no memory of ever being sick in my life even once), or it can be due to fairly obsessive things that are done to try and avoid vomiting (hand washing, avoiding sick people or places where sick people might be, triple checking meat is properly cooked etc).

onlyconnect · 21/07/2024 21:11

I have emetophobia too although it's improved compared to a few years ago. The Thrive programme by Rob Kelly helped me.
I've never seen anyone be sick at a concert.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 21/07/2024 21:11

I’ve been to loads of concerts, I’ve seen people wet themselves or pee into bottles etc in the crowd a few times but never ever seen anybody be sick.

mitogoshi · 21/07/2024 21:11

The only time I've seen vomit has been at festivals after all day drinking and too much sun. I'd also avoid Wetherspoons on weekends!

Swiftexit · 21/07/2024 21:13

@Pinkpurpleblue1 thanks for sharing that. Yes I can see how a back up plan is useful but this is quite a high stakes one as would mean spoiling the experience for 3 others.
I am leaning towards telling her I’d take her out though.
I might ask CAMHS about setiraline

This is very similar to my experience. Teens to pregnant at 30 petrified of being sick or others. Just seeing old sick on a pavement would ruin my day with anxiety, couldn't cope with people being sick in films etc.
Having children has been very good for exposure therapy and now I can handle it. Not quite as well as my OH does but I don't think that I'm 100% going to get it just because the kids have.
Its a very irrational phobia but I totally get the control it can have over your life and hope she finds therapy helpful.
Knowing there is a get out always helped my anxiety to the point that I never needed the back up plan so I hope she goes knowing you would leave if needs be but then has the best time ever!
