Random question about concerts and vomit

Sorry to ask here but need a reasonably big sample size!
Lucky enough to have tickets for a big concert this summer for me, a friend, dd & her friend.
Unfortunately dd has a severe phobia of vomit-enough to have significant impact on her life & school. We are seeing CAMHS but progress is slow and if anything she’s worse now than when I booked tickets.
She was nervous enough about going to the concert in the first place but has now managed to see videos on tiktok of people throwing up at other concerts and now she’s saying she can’t go.
I’ve been to a few concerts and can’t remember anyone being sick but she is on constant alert for it.
She’s said that maybe she could go if I promised to take her out if anyone was sick but she doesn’t want to spoil it for me.
I could easily sell her and her friend’s tickets but would be sad for them to miss out (especially the friend!)
So what I’m asking is what are the chances of someone being sick at a concert (where the target audience is teenage girls)?
And should I promise to take her out if it happens on the basis that it probably won’t or just give up on her going.

(I will add that I’m a bigger fan than her so will be going with my friend regardless!)

I've been to dozens and dozens of concerts, going right back to the late 80s, and have never seen anyone being sick.

Meowzabubz · 21/07/2024 21:25

As a (largely) recovered emetophobe in my 50s looking back on my life I'm suprised at how little I actually encountered vomit in day to day life. I think the last time I had a random vomit encounter in the wild was at a movie theater back in 2013.

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 21/07/2024 21:32

I’ve been to many a gig of different genres and agree that it’s rare. I was at a concert last night. Saw a couple of people looking worse for wear being attended to afterwards.
One thought - most places have an ‘accessible area’ for people with additional needs - obviously physically disabled but also people who need care/support. You might need an Access card (apply online for £15) but it’ll be less crowded and might just make her feel a bit more comfortable.

Ah bless her, I used to have a major vomit phobia when I was a teen, but a few years of going to raves and festivals soon cured that! It depends a huge amount on the event. A dance festival where there will inevitably be people on drugs = quite a high risk of seeing some puke. A concert mainly for teenage girls, very low risk.
I’ve never been on a rollercoaster though, as the idea of someone actually puking ON me, is still too grim to contemplate 😅 Emetephobia is a real thing, its actually the fear of a loss of control.

greengreyblue · 21/07/2024 21:36

I e been to loads of concerts over 35 years and not once have I seen this. I work in primary school and have only seen a few children vomit in 16 years!

Hurlingnovice · 21/07/2024 21:38

I have been to hundreds of concerts, gigs and festivals and the only time I've seen someone vomit was me, in the toilets, after a few too many drinks.

Swiftexit · 21/07/2024 21:42

@Meowzabubz 😂 at random vomit encounter in the wild! I keep telling her that there’s not nearly as much vomit round as she seems to think.
She does seem quite unlucky in that respect though. There’s been a bug going round her school and I’m surprised at how many don’t seem to be able to make it to the loo resulting in several rooms she’ll no longer go in.
Also had a horrible ferry journey last year which I’d have thought would be kill or cure but edged closer to the kill!

I don't go to loads of concerts but I did see someone throw up at a stadium concert last yr. Poor young girl had clearly had too much to drink.

Snackarooney · 21/07/2024 21:52

My ds' best friend (girl 10) has got Emetophobia and its so hard for her and her family. My own son is under camhs for other reasons. Its a real phobia not just a dislike and sounds like what your dd has. Never seen nayone be sick at a concert and tbh i cany understand why you wouldn't reassure her you'd take her out why you have to consider doing that. I know it's a lot of money to lose concerts aren't cheap but she needs to be taught and encouraged to try and face it head on and have experiences and also needs support from you! I feel like I'm being harsh but I have seen this kid and her family at absolute rock bottom and how hard her parents have worked with therapists to help her overcome her fear which she may never but she's in a better place. Please reassure her and please understand no band / artist / concert comes before your child

tinkrbell · 21/07/2024 21:52

To give you an idea of the number of concerts I go to- I’ve been to over 30 so far this year and have similar booked / planned for the rest of the year. I have never seen anyone throw up at one. The closest was someone front row (who clearly did not know how to do that safely in an arena after queuing for hours) who told security he felt unwell and was pulled out over the barrier. I’ve seen people unwell and with paramedics in toilets - but not actually witnessed them throwing up.

Swiftexit · 21/07/2024 22:01

@Snackarooney Oh I would absolutely take her out if it came to it but I can’t decide if this might be too much for her full stop.

I probably sound like I’m making light of it but I do understand how much it affects her. It has taken over our family life for the last few years and ruined her school life.

We went to Taylor Swift in Edinburgh, zero vomiting - not too much excessive drinking because of the 'mum-daughter' demographic

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 21/07/2024 22:30

I've never seen anyone puke at a concert; not even one with lots of drunk adults. Went to Taylor Swift at Wembley in June, no one puked there either. Outside the stadium, if you're spotted with alcohol they'll take it off you.

Swiftexit · 21/07/2024 22:42

Thanks-I’ve pretty much outed myself now anyway so yes it’s Taylor Swift.
Someone else who I know who went there said the general admission standing is busy but not completely shoulder to shoulder-can anyone else confirm that? Is it possible to stand in a more open bit even if that means a worse view?

Yes, you could stand at the back of the standing area and have loads of room. Groups of fans were dancing in full Willow-esque circles back there!

OP was at Taylor Swift in June standing...honestly not mad pushy, I'm 5ft 2inch so stood by the sound tent but honestly all around the standing area really good vibes and fun. Generally really good positive vibes...you'll be fine 😊

Sunnydaysun · 21/07/2024 23:09

I used to have this fear as a kid and thankfully it's eased as I've got older.
Started from someone (other kids) being sick near me, happened about 5 times close together In completely different situations!! 2 in a car 3 at school.

It may be no one is sick at the concert - unlikely but there is always the possibility.
Just like the possibility of shopping in the town and it happening.

Retrogamer · 21/07/2024 23:45

I have been to a concert many years ago and was near a girl who was sick. She had an ear infection and was adamant to still attend. I didn't appreciate the bowl of vomit being passed by me towards the aisle. I was on the tail end of getting over my phobia so it definitely ruined the night.
I have been to plenty more lively concerts since then and not witnessed any sickness in the actual venue.

My phobia became less the older I got. Now it's more of a negative reaction rather than total fear. If that gives any signs of hope, as I know everyone is different.

MissingMoominMamma · 21/07/2024 23:48

I have probably been to at least 8 gigs a year over the last 42 years, and I have never seen anyone throw up. My taste in live music is quite diverse too!

squeakandbubble · 21/07/2024 23:55

Someone was sick at Taylor Swift Wembley n1, I was in seated and saw her, thank goodness in the middle bowl because if I’d been in the seated right where she was I’d have had to leave. I really think this is not a common occurrence though.

There’s loads of room in standing and actually I think it’s better to stand at the back because the crowded part is just a sea of phones! Plus then you can make a swift exit (haha) if needed!

Its an incredible show, you’ll love it!

LadyCrumpet · 22/07/2024 00:02

How old is she?

I've been to many, many concerts and never once seen anyone be sick.

Coughsweet · 22/07/2024 00:18

I was at a concert the other day where several people fainted. One was right beside me as I was at the back of the standing area near the breeze from the exits and so in the zone of where those feeling dodgy were being led to. I didn’t see any one being sick.

Swiftexit · 22/07/2024 12:46

Thanks. I’ve told her I’ll take her out if it happens and will keep everything crossed that it doesn’t. Good to know we can get to a bit of space anyway.
She’s 15 but mixture of this phobia, general anxiety plus lockdown etc means she’s never been to anything like this before.
She’s back to planning outfits with friend now so although I’m sure there will be more wobbles before we go I’m a bit more hopeful she’ll make it.

Just to say we made it! No vomit that we knew of and although she went very quiet just before we went in (I think crowds plus not knowing what to expect) she was fine in the stadium and we had a great time.
We had a reasonable amount of space around us (less than an arms length but enough not to feel hemmed in) and it all felt friendly.
I hope this will encourage her to try other things out of her comfort zone.
