Help me understand baby clothes sizes and what I need

Getting myself all confused and wound up. Different shops seem to have different sizes, so newborn isn’t newborn and then there’s newborn 0-1, 1-3, 2-4 etc. I’m looking to get a few baby grows of early baby, newborn and next size up so covered for when they arrive. I’m so confused, are the sizes equal across the board and in the shop that does newborn and then 0-1 and 2-4 etc do I need to change up a size for everything every month at the start? And how much of everything do I need?

Babies vary in sizes so much. My first was 7lbs so not that tiny, but he was in premature clothes for the first month! My second was 9lbs so not that big, but 0-3 months was too short for him so he mostly wore 3-6 from the start. Have a set of newborn, 0-1 and 0-3 months and buy more of what you need when baby is here. You'll probably be inundated with gifts anyway and won't need to buy much.

When is your baby due OP? If it’s winter then they’ll probably wear a vest and sleepsuit plus maybe a cardigan. It’s usually one more layer than you so if you’re wearing a tshirt and jumper you would put them in a sleepsuit and cardigan plus a vest. But mostly my baby wore a sleepsuit with a vest underneath.

For both of ours I bought lots of 0-3, then a couple of 3-6. Both times dh ended up having to call into a shop on the way to the hospital for newborn, and I also ended up doing a tiny baby clothes order as soon as we got home! I never bought newborn/tiny baby just because I never expected them to fit into them based on their estimated birth weight and thought it would be a waste of money to buy them if they might not need them, so was happy to put them in 0-3 and then buy once they were here
