Friend Got The Sack.

My friend has an in law relation who is in the final stages of end of life. They live overseas.

My friend flew out to be with them and didn't declare this is her boss/manager and they have some how found out ( I'm not sure how ) and they have dismissed her.

My friend was working throughout the time she was out there ( office based ) and now she doesn't have a job.

Is there anyway she could fight this? She feels she has been unfairly dismissed.

Any HR advice or opinions welcome.

So she was pretending to work when she wasn't?
That will get you fired for sure

That's the opposite of what the OP said

I'm not sure why she didn't just ask for permission. I asked her a few questions about it but she got very cagey about it all.

She obviously knows she screwed up. I think she's just pretended to work from home and gone overseas.

But somehow they have found out.

They probably got a security alert if she tried to log in from abroad.

Your friend is a CF

In my work you are allowed to work abroad for a certain period but you must have permission. we have some colleagues from countries that are over 15 hour flight home and they have been allowed to work from that country but in our time zone. some do it and combine holidays with it. why oh why did your friend not talk to his or her manager ? they would have allowed her or allowed compassionate leave or worked something. I really don't know how they can fight this unless there is specific reason you don't know ? she really f up here

One of the businesses I advise has a “work from anywhere policy” over the summer. It’s not so much a problem for HMRC as they’ll be getting their tax through PAYE anyway. It is potentially a problem for the tax authorities in the country you base yourself, though the reality is for a few weeks here and there no one will care or find out. Many countries now also offer Digital Nomad visas to cover this type of work, albeit aimed at longer stays than a few weeks. But, and this is the important bit, it has employer sanction and you still have to tell them you’re doing it!

OP in a situation like this details matter. Your friend isn't telling you the truth and any bits of advice from internet strangers might only make things worse. Anybody can post nonsense on MN.

A quick Google of the term 'unfair dismissal' has lots of information from ACAS, she can also contact her union if she's in one.

But ultimately if she really believes that she's been unfairly dismissed she needs to consult an employement lawyer.
