I have a new pet hate...

It makes my blood boil when shop assistants scan and just say "359"... 359 what and where are your manners? £3.59 please!!!

Does this annoy anyone else?

The interaction I had last night went like this
(btw she was a 40-50 year old woman with her daughter

Red light blinking..

me: Hello, do you want to just pop your cheese down I think it's setting off the scale

customer: blank stare

me: looks at till sees she hasn't actually scanned the cheese yet. But it could be higher up than I can see on the list.

me: oh never mind, sorry have you scanned the cheese?

customer: No I have not bloody scanned my cheese. Huff

me: 🤨 Ok then

what I wanted to actually say was: Do you want me to start this interaction again and maybe this time you can try not being rude? You silly entitled cow. Shove your cheese up your rear end. Kindly 🙂

I worked on checkouts for years when I was younger to see me through uni, and customers are far worse than a staff member not saying please, will ever be!

You owe the money, they’re not begging you for it “oh please will you pay me the money, for what you’re buying”

Get a life.

Growlybear83 · 18/07/2024 10:07

I don't think there is ever any excuse for anyone, whether they are customers or sales assistants, not to say please or thank you - it's just the most basic manners. I've worked in a shop in the past, and had some really rude customers, but that really isn't a reason to treat other customers disrespectfully. I can honestly not remember an occasion when I haven't thanked someone or said please when I've been buying something in a shop, cafe, or having something delivered at home, or when I've been at work. Manners cost nothing but sadly, it seems that many people just aren't taught the most basic of manners nowadays.

It doesn't matter if you find the job awful and boring you shouldn't be ill mannered. But no doubt they were raised in house where manners is not a word they know.

Or maybe they were raised in a house where self respect was equal to respect for others and they don't feel the need to treat others as if they were above them.
The rudeness I've seen some checkout staff tolerate, then they complain that it's gone to over to serve yourselves then at a self checkout.

It annoys me too, immensely in fact, and I correct them. Especially if my daughter is with me. Yes I’m a nightmare but maybe they’ll think twice about forgetting to say please!

Wtf? And you consider yourself well behaved?

Isn't one of the first rules that you just don't publicly point out a small error and make a scene of it?

Wow, you're teaching your daughter to correct other people's manners? And you think they're being rude?

I'm willing to bet OP's "I pay your wages" attitude comes across loud and clear.

A friendly statement of fact is fine, it doesn't need the cursory please to make it polite.

Homedesign123 · 18/07/2024 10:15

The rudeness and entitlement shop workers have to put up with would shock you, last week I had a man make a complaint about me and this is what happened.

man 1: Can I have a couple of bags please?

me: yes of course, how many do you need?

man 1: 6

goes to gets the bags

on the short walk back with 6 bags in my hand man 2 enters

man 2: can I have a bag please?

me: I'm just taking these to another customer but I'll get you some in just a sec

man 2: Ok

i turn around to get him back and see him helping himself so I think that's that

untill I'm informed by my manager 5 minutes later that man 2 made a complaint and said I racially discriminated against him because I gave a white man bags and not him, oh please. 🙄🙄

Thankfully my managers knew it was a load of bollocks so ripped the complaint out of the book, it was bloody ludicrous

Ha, what? I always use my manners because they were drummed into me, but “correcting” someone?
That’s as rude as not using manners imho.

Why are you proud of being a nightmare, and of teaching your daughter to misbehave in the same way?

Do you somehow think that is good behaviour? How? You must have been brought up to be rude. I wouldn't bother saying please to you if you tried to correct me. I'd just ignore your "lesson"to me.

It may be a boring job, but I'm still paying their wages and it's just polite to say "please" and "thank you".
It's just basic manners which appear to have gone out the window in recent generations.

Oooooh you're one of THOSE! "IM PAYING YOUR WAGES!!!!"
No you're really not, your money isn't going directly to that cashier, police man, waitress whomever else you think you're better than!

Sosorryliver · 18/07/2024 10:19

I think just stating the amount is fine. My local shop staff are perfectly nice they’ve offered me a bag, asked whether I have a loyalty card and, if there’s no queue, we’ve probably shared some inane chit chat about weather/ parking/ tourists. The polite bit comes at the end normally, they give me receipt I say thank you they say you’re welcome or have a nice day etc I work in hospitality so I appreciate it’s a long day dealing with the public.

Maverickess · 18/07/2024 10:22

"I pay their wages"

Well it seems like you're not paying enough to get the service you desire then. If the servants servers aren't up to scratch then maybe you need to go somewhere where the calibre is better, which unfortunately comes with a higher price tag because they get paid (the wages you pay remember) more.

Freeme31 · 18/07/2024 10:24

Agree it's just basic manners but unfortunately not everyone is brought up in households where kindness and basic manners are valued. I try not to let it annoy me and think it's a shame for the person and maybe they are sad or having a bad day so alway try to be kind to them. I often think situations like this ie politeness/anger/manners etc says more about them. Just be kind and move on

How much are you buying that you’re paying their wages, what a silly comment.

ichundich · 18/07/2024 10:28

Be grateful if there still is a shop assistant.

Monsterjam · 18/07/2024 10:29

It’s not really a request though is it! You want the goods, you give them the money! They are just telling you how much you owe.
have a nice day or something would be nice but I don’t think please is needed

CBM40 · 18/07/2024 10:33

They aren't asking for payment. They are informing u of the total so it doesn't make any sense to say please. I'll bet they say thank you when the payment is made.

Unknownsecret · 18/07/2024 10:33

SoupDragon · 18/07/2024 09:00

See, I think "please" implies that paying them is optional. They aren't asking you for anything, they are telling you how much your shopping costs. Do you say "please can I pay by card?" or similar

Being smiley and not actually rude is enough. They are the ones doing something for you.

Exactly this. The assistant is literally just telling you the cost of your shopping - you have to pay, it’s not optional. Please or no please makes no difference to me when shopping - I have polite, smiley chat with them while they do their job. Maybe you should try the same OP.

pinacollateral · 18/07/2024 10:36

Small things occupy small minds.

Blackcats7 · 18/07/2024 10:38

I can’t imagine how “please” on the end of a request doesn’t come naturally to anybody. I would have to make a deliberate effort not to say it.
Agree manners are generally in decline sadly

torturedpoet13 · 18/07/2024 10:38

I work at a checkout and I always say

'That'll be £3.59 when you're ready'

Then they pay and then I thank them after payment is made and when handing receipt
