Tenacious D and Trump

Is anyone else gutted that Tenacious D has cancelled their tour and possible future collaborations as a result of Kyle Gass's comment in Sydney about Trump? :(

Yes, it was ill-judged and inappropriate, but I would have thought an apology on twitter from both should suffice. Other celebrities have made remarks in the past that have landed them in hot water but then it's forgotten after a few weeks - but Jack Black seems to have decided to take an extreme stance on this.

My son is, he saw them in May and said they were amazing

Cosmosforbreakfast · 17/07/2024 18:20

It might seem like an over reaction, but Jack Black might be afraid of some wackadoodle gun happy Trump supporter coming after them in retaliation. A shooting at a concert maybe, people could be hurt or killed. I assume they'll lie low for a while and let it all die down, then go back on tour.

Or that somebody will ‘finish the job in the name of Kyle Gass’ (that’s how the media would spin it anyway)

lightinthebox · 17/07/2024 18:27

Complete over reaction, it was a joke and you can’t deny lots of people are saying/thinking the same thing.

GiftOrNoGift · 17/07/2024 18:28

I am shooketh.

BloodandGlitter · 17/07/2024 18:31

I can't understand why a comedy band is being held to higher standards than those of many in the American Government who have made vile comments about the killings of people in the LGBTQ and black communities.

It wasn’t the greatest joke in the world - it was just a tribute

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/07/2024 18:37

Because their fan base includes a lot of people who would take extreme umbrage at this and potentially put the band and their audiences at risk - after all, DT told them to fight - and you don't want the 50% who are very angry about it and the 50% that mostly agree or at least think it was funny/what they were thinking already in a crowded arena with lots of alcohol on sale.

Screamingabdabz · 17/07/2024 18:44

I don’t condone political violence either. I didn’t laugh when people made similar jokes in the office, but the fact that an off the cuff satyrical joke like that has resulted in this massively overblown response, shows you just how fucked up society is and that sadly free speech is an endangered animal.

My son lives in Oz and had tickets and is absolutely gutted... he's wanted to see them for years.
Massive over reaction :(

I feel a bit disappointed in Jack Black for this. Like he’s thrown his best mate under the bus. Kyle shouldn’t have said it in public but it’s a massive overreaction.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 20/07/2024 01:59

Ridiculous overreaction. Feel sorry for disappointed fans. JB is being a bit of a twit.

HoppingPavlova · 20/07/2024 02:28

I’d wager it was Jack Black’s management that have dictated this, not Jack himself (who personally probably agrees and doesn’t give two fucks). I think he has a few major movies coming out this year and I doubt his management wants cuckoo Trump supporters calling for them all to boycott them etc.

FleaDog · 20/07/2024 02:32

Isnt the insinuation it's JB's contracts with Disney or Dreamworks that he's keeping safe by distancing himaelf from the comments?

It's (possibly) all about the money!

GirlAnachro · 20/07/2024 03:28

I was at the show it happened at. The audience laughed along, I heard zero complaints/boos, Jack didn’t show an ounce of shock or anger, he went along with it and they played another hour of the show including fun skits together.
it wasn’t til Wednesday that he suddenly announced his apparent disgust that was so bad he’s ok with throwing his ‘brother’ (his own words) of 30 years, who he wouldn’t even be famous without, under the bus.
it was obviously done bc there was some backlash, including one of our right wing politicians calling for deportation.. to be honest it’s obvious he is only worried about his image in Hollywood, which is pretty vapid and lame for someone who’s always prided himself on being metal and idolising bands like Black Sabbath, who had ppl literally burning their vinyls and massive uproar from ‘good Christian families™️’ trying to ban them for being satanic.. did they all crumble and capitulate? No, they ignored them as people who’s opinions didn’t matter.
this is disappointing to me, really weak behaviour, he doesn’t care about “wah political violence”, he cares about some people being mad at him. Now he’s ruined it for hundreds of fans who were looking forward to seeing them, people will have saved up for tickets, booked time off work and paid for hotels and flights which might not be refundable (and we’ve got cost of living mess crisis here too) he’s ruined it for tons of fans just cos he’s worried about a bit of criticism.
about as metal as a tub of playdough.
As for the idiot he’s suddenly all offended for a joke over.. this post I saw sums it up. If this had happened to Biden we all know he’d be gloating and frothing about it. @

I was hoping JB had taken this stance as a PR move to mitigate any potential damage to his Hollywood career, but that it was done with KG's approval - but given that KG has now deleted his apology on his insta feed, it appears that they have genuinely fallen out. Like previous posters, it's really made me rethink my opinion on JB and how he could throw Kyle under the bus. I've seen them twice live in the last 2 years and to think they could fall out over something so trivial is upsetting :(

Or indeed Trump himself, who publicly encouraged "second amendment people" to "do something about" Hillary Clinton.

I think when there are multi-million dollar contracts involved for JB’s other work it’s easier to imagine ‘how he could throw Kyle under the bus’. Not nice though. Hypocritical given JB likely thought exactly the same thing, yes. Hard to imagine how/why, nope. As they say it’s the money that talks.
