I need an idiots guide to echo/dot things

At present we gave no alexa/smart speakers/ echo dot in our house.
I have promised my son when he gets a new room he can have one in his room to listen to music (he has Spotify) and turn of his lights etc. He's a wheelchair user and hasn't had his own room for years while we've tried to get it built so I want to make it accessible as possible.
What tech do I need to buy?

Don't. They listen to everything
No idea why anyone would want such an intrusion in their home.

What other tech can be voice activated to listen to music and turn off lights?

Smart bulb for lamps and lights and also smart plugs, good for tech, I use them for wax burners and set them to a routine. I like the tapo ones.

You'll need the alexa app to set up the Spotify and bulbs but once done, it works great. The routines are good as you can set lights to come on at Sunset rather than a set time.
