Advice please

Have purchased a 2nd hand car from a garage today, after getting it home the engine management light has come on. The car cost 14k.
Advice on where we stand much appreciated

Exactly this happened to us last year. The legal position was never tested but the garage willingly took it back and tried to fix it. After a few days it happened again, and eventually the garage agreed that we could buy another car instead, and loaned us a courtesy car while we chose. It was a national chain with a decent reputation and a wide stock to choose from, so we went along with this rather than insisting on a refund, which I had the impression they would have been less keen on.
