AArgh! Just discovered I put salt in the fruit crumble ! I decant sugar salt etc into bigger jars and picked the wrong one, well it looked like castor sugar ! Good job I decide to take a taste before serving !
What are your cooking faux pas ? Note I now have labelled the jars !

I served up a potato salad at a bbq once...Mayo, chives, crisp bacon bits all mixed together, the works...only for someone to take a bite and quickly tell me I had forgotten to cook the potatoes!

Not mine (not that I am a great cook) but my mum's, bless her (rip). She brought us in some sausage rolls. I said hey! this pastry is sweet! She obviously had some pastry in the fridge and had not labelled it sweet.

Undaunted she merely took our plates away and returned them with cherries stuffed where the sausage had been! We often laugh about that! Well, no point wasting it!

I think it was probably cherry pie filling as she often used it for pie filling.

Made a paella using plain water instead of stock. Was a little bland! Had fish fingers instead...

DD did similar OP and proudly served her grandmother with pancakes sprinkled with a lot of salt.

I once digiliently chopped all the meat, veg etc for dinner... and dropped the whole lot on the floor. DH poured me a large glass of wine and got the takeaway menu out.

I used to make really nice fruit cakes. I've not made one in 30yrs because I broke my tooth on the last one!

Comedycook · 17/07/2024 08:43

Made a chicken noodle stir fry for dh. Thought I was putting in soy sauce...it was actually balsamic vinegar. He ate the whole thing without complaint though

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/07/2024 08:44

I have, more than once, strained gravy straight into the sink.

Served seriously undercooked turkey one Christmas. In my defence I had 8 week old twins and no idea why I was hosting Christmas. Thankfully no one ate it!

LaMarschallin · 17/07/2024 08:52

I've done the salt-in-crumble thing. My defence being that we were on a family holiday and had all brought different ingredients. As well as sugar my MiL had brought an enormous Tupperware box of salt. I (foolishly) couldn't imagine that anyone would bring thar much salt for 7 people for a week, so assumed it was the sugar.
The old trope about ass u & me applied.

Messiest was making blackcurrant and raspberry jelly (as opposed to jam). Poured the mixture into the suspended jelly bag a bit too vigorously. The jelly bag detached from the stand fell - SPLAT! - onto the floor...
The kitchen looked like an abattoir Shock

I often make yoghurt muffins and one day only had blueberry flavor. The muffins came out grey!

As a teenager I cooked fairy cakes under the grill because I couldn't get the oven to work. They were black on top and liquid underneath. My friend made a Swiss roll and forgot to put in the flour.

I did cook a frozen lamb shank in the airfryer the other day without reading the instructions properly, the salvageable meat was put out for the visiting fox. We had an omelette for dinner.

I saw this thread but hoped I wouldn't need to post on it... Well, the time has come. Yesterday I used the only flour I had to coat chicken thighs before frying. I knew it was self-raising, but thought it would be OK... It wasn't! I haven't yet come clean to DH about it. Or the strange aftertaste and extreme thirst that followed. I rinsed the leftovers.

anareen · 27/11/2024 06:03

I made corona lime cupcakes with a cream cheese frosting and forgot to put vanilla extract 🤦🏻‍♀️

Deathraystare · 27/11/2024 18:27

My mum's was the best! Normally she was a great cook.

She made her own pastry and put would put bits she hadn't used in the freezer.

One day she decided to do sausage rolls.

I noticed the pastry was sweet. Withought a word, she took our plates into the kitchen, and some time later she came back triumphantly with a can of cherries inserted in to the now empty 'sausage' rolls!
