Hi, just wondering what sort of kindle is best - is the paperwhite worth it, for example?

Yeah defo paperwhite to read in the dark. You want the most expensive one you can justify I reckon and a nice case to keep it pristine.

SoupDragon · 16/07/2024 15:46

I think even the basic ones light up now so it's less clear cut as to whether a Paperwhite is worth it.

it depends how much you'll use it. I use mine all the time so went for a Signature one but this is expensive, befor that I was happy with my old Paperwhite.

Just not a Fire basically!

AllBranEater · 16/07/2024 15:54

Thanks @TheSnowQueen - I'll have a look at the more expensive ones. Thanks @SoupDragon , I'll stay away from the fire...

The main difference now is that the Paperwhite is waterproof, so if you want to read in the bath, at the spa or on the beach, it might be worth it, otherwise, the basic Kindle is probably fine.

But you can read them all in the dark now. The Paperwhite is waterproof, has a slightly bigger screen and the lighting might be a bit nicer, but it's not necessarily worth nearly twice as much £ to the OP.

I'm onto my 4th.. Got one as soon as they came out.. gosh how they have changed .
Paperwhite is the best I've had by far .
I read daily.

Top tip:

Buy the Kids Paperwhite.

It's exactly the same as the normal one (just go into settings and switch off kids mode when you get it), but it comes with two year guarantee, a cover (I got the green forest one - not childish at all; there's also a black cover) and I think it automatically comes ad free.

Just avoid the Fire which is jack of all trades, master of none.

beguilingeyes · 16/07/2024 16:55

Have a look at eBay. People upgrade and sell their old ones. You can get them second hand cheap as chips.

Kids paper white!

mine has hands down been the lowest cost per use item I have ever owned. I get daily emails from BookBub with offers on books including freebies and we’ve got a few ‘stuff your kindle’ days coming up with tons of free books

Quick breakdown of difference between current models (or what is important to me). All current Kindles come with built in lights (which used to only be the Paperwhite and above models). The Kindle Paperwhite, Signature Edition and Oasis have warm lighting in addition to cool; the Signature Edition and Oasis only have adaptive lights.

The Kindle Paperwhites and Oasis are waterproof where the standard edition isn't (though my 2011 Kindle is fine for reading in the bath assuming I don't drop it).

The Oasis is the only model which has physical page turn buttons, though hasn't been updated for some years now.

Kindles nowadays come with the option for "Special Offers" and I would choose to pay more to not have ads on my lockscreen, but might not be important to you. You can request the ads be removed later if you want - or buy the Kids edition which doesn't have ads as standard.

There’s also a size difference. My Kindle is the size of the current smallest Kindle and I love that size. It’s so portable, fits in all of my bags and my husband’s pockets, and that means that it’s so much easier to take out and about. Some people prefer having the larger screen, but I really value the portability.

I bought a paperwhite for holidays so I can read it in the sun and not worry about dropping it in the pool.
