Should I apply for this promotion?

I work in an organisation going through a difficult time, with plans underway to cut many posts through voluntary severance scheme or compulsory redundancies. My boss, who I like very much and is a great professional, got affected and has been offered a role at my level, with his current salary ringfenced for a few months.

Unexpectedly, now three new roles at his salary level have been advertised. In any other circumstances, I would not hesitate to apply as opportunities for promotions are so infrequent. Also, a new round of redundancies is possible next year and if that did happen, my guess is that it would affect colleagues in my salary range - I'm at the top end so I'd be at a significant risk. I could, of course, change institutions, but there are very, very few jobs in my field as the sector is on its knees.

My hesitation comes from the fact that this is my boss's opportunity to apply and get back to his original level in our organisation. I worry I will be seen as going after "his" job. We are quite good friends and I'd hate for him to think that.

What do you think?

Maybe you're right, but somehow I can' shake off the feeling that perhaps these roles are informally ringfenced for colleagues affected by "demotion"?

Following as in a similar position.

OP are you a woman? I can't imagine a man would hesitate and be concerned about a colleague like that.

In which case you won't get the job
You certainly won't get it if you don't apply though.

Of course you should apply. There are three roles so there’s room for your colleague to be promoted too. But even if it was just one role you should still apply. You may be the best person for the job. Have some confidence in your ability.

Gizlotsmum · 16/07/2024 10:52

Apply. You might not get it, your colleague might not apply and then if you don’t you have missed the opportunity for nothing.

Yes, I think you're all right. Opportunities are so infrequent at my place it seems silly not to apply.
