So sad about Strictly.

It's been part of our family life since it started. I really wanted to think it was as wholesome and joyous and life affirming as it looked, even though I knew it probably wasn't.

And there are celebrities that I feel differently about now because they didn't blow the whistle.😢

I always imagined it was gruelling , but hitting and kicking someone just for better marks is just appalling.
I know they will do a 20th anniversary special and front it out, but it's definitely tainted now by all this.

This!

I don’t really get the issue. If anyone wants to be able to dance to a high enough standard to be on Saturday night telly and not be laughed at, they need to train hard. Dance is notorious for the training regimes imposed. Dance instructors are famously harsh.

I wouldn’t do it because I wouldn’t want to be abused and humiliated in draughty dance studios. But then I don’t want to show off in front of millions of people.

Anyone who thinks Strictly is all cosy and supportive - those chats on the sofa 🤮 - is easily led.

You don't need/deserve to be hit, kicked or spat on though, do you?

Not sure if he's suing them, but I did see that he said they should have given him anger management classes which is an insane way to react. His argument seems to be that the show pushed him to be so hard on his celebs 🙄

Really no taking ownership whatsoever for the acts he committed! Blaming someone else for not stopping him, thinks he’s in the right, has not made himself look good one bit.

Time for it to end, I think. At least in its current format. Perhaps have a weekly winner and then a semi-final and final, so you only appear on three shows.

magicmushrooms · 16/07/2024 13:52

SCD should have been shelved a long time ago. It had become far too competitive & the true spirit of the competition lost. It is nowhere near the program it used to be.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 16/07/2024 13:52

Didn't Rachel Riley marry her dance partner?

Yes, they're still married.

I don't think her complaint about the show was anything to do with him specifically, just that the general environment was very stressful. It wasn't his training methods.

Tillievanilly · 16/07/2024 13:52

I don’t often watch it. But there seems a lot is put on for the cameras to make it good television. I do not question bullying. However we live in a British culture where a lot of the professional dancers being criticised are not British. But have made comments about their passion. Yes they have to work hard to get results. But I wonder if cultural differences have allowed for what is being criticised. I’m not sure what is the right/wrong situation. But it’s sad for all involved.

cupcaske123 · 16/07/2024 13:53

@ClownsFear I meant why didn't she feel that she was supported or that there was proper safeguarding in place to protect her.

However, I agree and see it perhaps as a boiled frog scenario which started small and gradually escalated. Perhaps it went from verbal abuse to pushes, then slaps, then spitting. I also wonder about her background and whether this is behaviour she is familiar with.

Again, women will also have experienced the same kind of bullying training but the female professionals haven't been spitting at and kicking the men. Though there seems to have been some instances of bullying towards the men.

My heart goes out to Zara who must have felt very alone and traumatised by such abusive behaviour.

The BBC says it has strict procedures in place but they are evidently not effective and need rehauling.

Rachel Riley just jumps on any bandwagon going.

I agree that there may be some level of cultural differences, Italy is a very misogynistic country, but kicking and hitting someone can not be down to that.

TallulahBetty · 16/07/2024 13:58

The victim-blaming and blind defence of these dancers on Facebook in particular has been disgusting. Mostly from women!! I despair.

Here's an idea for any budding authors.
Bursting The Strictly Bubble.
Bonus points for mentioning the following...

conflicts with pros:

Sarah Manners - rows with Brendan (he stormed off set week 2 after their rumba and wouldn't talk to her and said it was like "dancing with a brick wall")

Georgina Bouzova (James's first partner and last minute replacement for Gaby Logan) - rows with James (the audience allegedly booed at the footage)

Claire King - Brendan said he wanted to be partnered with Emma Bunton or Carol Smilie. Negative/indifferent attitude towards her and allegedly didn't realise she was in agony because of her arthritis.

Laila Rouass - the P word fiasco
Lulu - conflicts with Brendan. She never understood the pairing. No love lost between them. "Bloody Lulu".

Fern Britton - alleged that Artem kicked and shoved her in training

Steve Backshall - interesting one this. There was a leak of bullying claims/chaperone but he did go on to deny them/united front at the time. He had a fused left ankle so dancing was excruciating.

Laura Whitmore - uncomfortable pairing, unhappy with forced proximity and publicity, crying every day,
left broken mentally and physically.

Ranvir Singh - reported unease with training
Amanda Abbington - vomiting and crying after rehearsals, reported feet stamped on/lewd behaviour (denied/under investigation)
Zara McDermott - kicked, hit, spat on according to tabloid reports

injuries:

Jodie Kidd - fractured rib
Jade Johnson - right knee
Mark Benton - both knees
Tameka Empson - knee
Will Bayley - leg
Jamie Laing - foot
AJ Odudu - foot
Nigel Harman - rib
Tony Adams - hamstring

stresses/disappointment/other:

Zoe Lucker - long term effect of Strictly nerves/shaking at a song
Sophie Ellis Bextor - "cult of Strictly"/emotional care should be provided
Jennifer Gibney - underestimated what went into it
Sunetra Sarker - nervous when music comes on/left feeling vulnerable
Helen George - naive going in/also said the repetitions in rehearsal took toll
Rev Richard Coles - brutal awakening he couldn't dance
Simon Rimmer - so tired he was hallucinating
Alex Burke - trolling from public/conflict over Gorka's commitment
Vick Hope - therapy after being stressed, nervous and worried
Faye Tozer - intense training, broken down off screen
Michelle Visage - clashed with Gio
Mike Bushell - trolling from public, denials that he was desperate to leave
Robert Webb - brutal and weird set-up of reality comps
Richie Anderson - reported clashes with Gio
Will Young - left for personal reasons (mental health) wanted to break his leg
Caroline Quentin - claimed some pros (not Jojo) "so ambitious they don't care what they put their guest through"
Johnny Ball - alleged Aliona exaggerated her injury to avoid partnering him
Rachel Riley - reliving the experience when music heard, scary and unnerving

judging/voting:
Anthony Ogogo - upset at producers partnering him with Oti (racist GBP)
Craig Kelly "putting the boot in" (judges)
Jan Ravens "hope you're happy now" (Craig)
Will Young told by Len to "shut up" (turn up and keep up)
Ricky Whittle - wanted to see the public vote figures
Jamelia - dance off rigged/fake applause
Kelly Brook - criticised when Len knew her Dad was dying
Jonnie Peacock - incorrect posture he had no control over

(That's all before you include implosions of relationships and bad PR)
Seann Walsh - claimed career dead after it/battled depression and anxiety
Danny John-Jules - claimed producers had maligned him

The pros will have their stories to tell, I'm sure.
Karen was hinting at other dalliances (she knows where the bodies are buried, I wonder if it was a deliberate comment).
On top of which, female pros will have had their fair share of hassle. Amy and DJJ conflict regarding routines was reported on before his elimination.
I am old enough to remember at least three male slebs who seemed a bit handsy with their pros.

Get writing! There's a Xmas book in there somewhere! (Can the Beeb sue if it's true?! Grin

Edited

Eek! Is that all your own research?

These poor men, it's not their fault! And even if it was, why didn't someone stop them?! Wahhhhhhhhhh

Will Young was intriguing tbh.

Who is?

Hughs · 16/07/2024 14:01

I was a front row audience member in one of the very first programmes and the production staff were ruthless. The audience applause is staged and forced.

Ruthless how?

Ginger Neil apparently is a contender! The most boring person ever.

Give me him over the others. Fat suit routine and Nell de Jaunes persona aside, I think Thirsty Neil could teach me without losing it. Actually his experience dancing in a fat suit might come in useful, given I'm plus size. Wink

Who's an attention seeker? If you're talking about Zara she didn't make a complaint. Footage of the abuse was given to BBC controllers and he was sacked.

Yuck! I can't stand him. But preferable to some idiot who spits at women.

Didn't Rachel Riley marry her dance partner?

She did. Happily married with children. She still stated that doing the show left her with mild trauma in that every time she hears the music, it transports her back to feeling nervous and petrified. At least two others (Sunetra Sarker and Zoe Lucker) have reported the same.
