Tell me about your hobbies

What hobbies do you enjoy? DC's are becoming more independent so have some free time on my hands.

I go gym and enjoy it. Enjoy reading on my kindle but would like something to fill my time in the evenings and weekends.

There aren't many options for team sports or group get togethers where I am.

I would love to hear what other people do as a hobby for some inspiration Smile

My hobbies are generally fitness related - I go to PT sessions once a week, gym by myself (following PT program) once a week, Body Balance once a week, running 2x a week.
I used to be involved in musical theatre before DD (2.5 now) was born. I play the piano and violin as well...although since moving house with my mum, we had to get rid of our piano for size and haven't really brought out my violin in a while.
Maybe learn to play an instrument? My mum started playing violin when she retired. Join a choir? Art/craft classes maybe? Swimming?

Coldupnorth87 · 16/07/2024 09:42

I've started cycling more. Getting out with local Breeze rides and going to coaching. All a bit accidental but really enjoying myself.

Otherwise, baking and cooking and whatever interests me. Must pick up learning a language again...

Regalia · 16/07/2024 09:43

Sea swimming, hillwalking, opera, theatre, I volunteer as a drystone wall restorer, and do litterpicks on local beaches.

If you like reading, see if you can find a book group?

snowlady4 · 16/07/2024 09:49

Do you like any crafts? Knitting, sewing, crochet?

LunaNorth · 16/07/2024 09:53

Drawing. I have a weekly art lesson and an easel at home.
Yoga - weekly lesson.
French - weekly lesson.
Fitness. I have a PT, whom I see once a week, and do two sessions at home (kettlebells, resistance bands, exercise bike).
Gardening - I grow a lot of fruit and veg.
Outdoor swimming - I have a couple of places nearby that I try to get to at least once a week.
Dog walking - endless (four dogs).
I also write, but with little success lately, and have a guitar.

PetrichorSoul · 16/07/2024 09:53

Movement for health is a hobby of mine as I detach myself from toxic diet culture. I go to the gym 3-4 days a week to lift weights. I also swim and cycle (meandering) a few times a week.

I love Sudoku, jigsaws and I crochet. That fills my time. I only learned to crochet when I was 40!

SeeSeeRider · 16/07/2024 09:58

Languages and drawing, and gardening. Learning Catalan atm. Only to beginner level but it's fun. Already done French, Spanish, and Italian. Going to drawing class once a week. Gardening just playing around with a 'wild' look. Plus reading of course. Oh and Pilates.

spikeandbuffy · 16/07/2024 10:00

Netball - couch to court, I love it!
Spin/peloton weights at home
Outdoor swimming

HcbSS · 16/07/2024 10:02

DH and I are both keen runners (met in a running club). I am also in a choir and he is very involved with the air cadets.
Neither of us can stand ‘home-based’ hobbies (although I love cooking) and we don’t really watch tv. People wander ‘how do we relax’ but for us relaxation is being active. Both have intense jobs and we need this.

Frostandfrogs · 16/07/2024 10:07

I loved the late, lamented Michael Moseley's Just One Thing podcasts.
I have found that around my appalling MN habit (lurking, mainly) his suggestions of swimming, or walking, or learning a language or learning to juggle, or volunteering or any of the many many other things are fun to try. That keeps me amused without feeling the need to settle on anything.

I have been trying to increase my repertoire of family meals by trying a new recipe once every week or two.
I have a basic tapestry kit to start. I have had it since Christmas.

A big decluttering of my home, thanks to a hoarder ex plus Adhd tendencies of my own took about ten years, so I still get utter joy from pottering about my very simply furnished home, and cleaning things that I can get at now.
Re reading old books. I have got rid of many, but have started one bookshelf for old childhood books that I have repurchased.

Gently getting into gardening now that we can afford a weekly gardener, as I am no longer overwhelmed by the state of it.

Also I am not very good at art, but I learned about Zentangling on MN and it's surprisingly easy. Easily googleable.

So I don't suppose I have hobbies as such, as they probably require commitment. But these are all things I do.

I really like this post too. It could have been my shorter answer - but without the weights as I volunteer with a horse rescue which involves quite a lot of lifting on it's own

I started ice skating lessons about two years ago as a total beginner, which I love. I’m not a natural but I’ve met a nice group of friends there at about a similar ability.

I also go to one or two weights classes a week. I can’t say I love it, but again there’s a nice group of people there - mostly women - and I’m glad I do it.

At home I mostly do jigsaw puzzles and read. Puzzle brands I’m loving at the moment are Cloudberries and Elena Essex for the illustration styles. I’m getting more into 500 piece puzzles over 1000 lately because it only takes one evening to complete (and the Ravensburger Circle of Colours puzzles are gorgeous).

Also love baking and cooking. We don’t have children so I’m happy to put more effort into midweek meals on free evenings as there’s not the pressure to get food on the table and risk that it it will all go in the bin.

During lockdown I really enjoyed Grayson Perry's Art Club on TV. I had a real longing to do art again, after not doing anything since school. I found a local class and I've been learning oil painting, really enjoy it, it's v fulfilling and my group is lovely too. Here's some of my paintings!

I garden a lot and have a garden related side hustle. I run a bit and go to an Animal Flow class once a week, which I practice at home. I crochet and knit, and also sew although I'm not doing it much at present. I read a lot, mostly thrillers and non-fiction. I don't really watch TV or movies, and would much rather be in bed with a book!

What did you used to enjoy doing when you were younger/before children?

Flumpie59 · 16/07/2024 11:36

I'm a huge reader, have always got my snoot in a book. At the moment I'm reading The Wrestling by Simon Garfield and also Victim Without A Face by Stefan Ahnhem.

I'm really interested in UFO's, paranormal, cryptozoology, forensic facial reconstructions .... as in when they find bones of a cave person then bring them back to life, I'm always on YouTube watching those!

I collect bookmarks and write poems.

I'm physically disabled/24/7/365 pain so can't do anything like running etc. so have to have at-home things only. I also play games on my mobile - Bean Chomper, Rope and Balls, Word Town, Bubble Tower 3D! Bubble Pop, Bubble Pop Royal, Fancy Puzzles: Jigsaw Game, and various cross-stitch/painting ones.

Tarkan · 16/07/2024 11:56

I have various health issues so can't do a lot physically at times but I go to yoga and Pilates once a week each.

I also try to get out walking and I play Pokémon Go to help me want to go out more, although sometimes I just end up in the pub so not always my healthiest thing. 😁

I volunteer in wardrobe in a local am dram theatre.

I'm also a season ticket holder for my local football club so waiting for the season to start again.

I do a lot of crafts too, I cycle through a variety of things depending on my mood.

I also game a bit, nothing too action based, stuff like The Sims, Papers Please, Observation Duty and ParaEyes. Or ones on my phone like Monopoly Go, Love and Pies, and Rescue Dash. Again depends how I feel with what I play.

Thank you all! I've made a list based on your suggestions.

And well done to the artists - fabulous work!
