Question re. period underwear for tweens / young teens

NC for this as I feel quite embarrassed to ask, but I’ve been here a long time. Cancel the cheque, naice ham, all that.

My daughter is 11, and I am just planning ahead for when she starts her periods, whenever that might be.

Period underwear seems like a fantastic innovation and I have used them myself in recent years. But one thing is nagging at me and making me wonder if they are right for girls just starting……

Bear with me, but has anyone found that they make periods harder to manage in the early months / years? With pads or even tampons you can (TMI) see the blood and gradually get an idea of your flow level, how your period typically tends to be, the rhythm of it for want of a better word. But I’m assuming with period underwear that kind of visual clue (however unappealing it might be) isn’t there.

Obvs wiping gives an idea, but I’ve really got it into my head that using period pants from the get go could make it harder to get used to periods.

Am I overthinking this? Any advice or experiences.

Many thanks.

I've just started using them. Only because I keep seeing them mentioned on here and how great they are. I wasn't sure about it but I thought my daughter may want to try them when the time comes so I should really try them first to see what they are like.

I really don't think it matters to be honest. Like you say you can see how much when u wipe etc so that gives an idea. I think they would be brilliant for young girls or to be fair anyone! I hardly feel like I'm on my period now apart from the headaches and stomach cramps. They usually come just before my period starts though.

I got some for my DD. She wears a mix of pants and pads.
The pants are useful when she is due to have her period so that if it starts suddenly (at school for example) she is protected. Then when she has her period she wears pads with the pants, for extra protection and to avoid leaks.
Towards the end of her period, she goes back to just pants again.

I wish they had been around when I was a teenager!

They're a game changer. I highly recommend.

Reading with interest as I'm also preparing with my 11 yr old. I just bought some pads. I feel so sorry for them, 40 years of this crap ahead of them.

I would have hated them when I was 12 +

I liked to be able to throw a pad away and put a clean one on.

I'd hate to sit in the blood all day and have to take a plastic bag and carry soiled knickers in my school bag.

I use them for the early and late days of periods where there isn't much there.
