Cancelling holiday - do I claim first or cancel flights/accommodation

We are due to travel on Friday but DD, who is due to be travelling with us, is in hospital and won't be discharged for at least 10 days, possibly longer. This will be confirmed in a meeting with doctors tomorrow.
We obviously can't travel without her and I have travel insurance through a bank account but am not sure what order I need to do things once I know she will remain in hospital - do I contact the insurer first and then cancel our flights/accommodation or do I cancel flights etc. first and then contact the insurer? I will obviously get proof of DD's hospitalisation etc. Any advice at a very stressful time appreciated.

Contact the insurer first, they'll explain the steps for making a claim. Then contact the travel agent/airline and cancel the tickets. The insurer will need to see this to process the claim
