Can this wedding dress be altered?

I can save £1,500 buying it second hand, but it is 1 size too small for me.

Does it look like it could be altered?

Many thanks

Have you tried it on? Wedding dress sizing is not consistent in my experience

WeeOrcadian · 14/07/2024 17:49

It looks like panels could be added, but I'm no seamstress

Are you sure on the sizing though? When I was WD shopping, everything came up at least two sizes smaller

Overthebow · 14/07/2024 17:50

Wedding dresses often come up smaller so it may be a couple of sizes too small. It’s much easier to take in a dress then it is to make it bigger.

Probably if it was one size too big, but marching the fabric and lace for one size too small would be a challenge

Shybutrude · 14/07/2024 18:19

Wedding dress sizing is often not consistent , it bears no relevance to high street sizing ( which to be honest varies hugely) it's not always consistent between brands. I personally would be wary,I'm not saying it's impossible and most dresses can be altered, but they do need skill and finesse to make them look good

I’m an experienced dressmaker. I’d say it would be very difficult to alter the lace top. As there will be little or no give in the seams, the top would have to be re-made. This could be done but the lace would be different.

DoreenonTill8 · 14/07/2024 20:15

That's not a dress @nailnc the Lace bit is a body suit and the skirt is separate?

Madcats · 14/07/2024 20:21

Be honest; which bits will need enlarging?

Sleeves/shoulders would be tricky (but that might be stretchy enough to cope-can't tell).

Front bodice (if larger bust) can't see that being possible.

Waist/bodice - possible, but you would need to lose some of the back skirt to provide some material.

If you are potentially going to save £1,600, pay a decent seamstress to go to a fitting with you.

It does look like a body suit and skirt, though.

Have you seen the second hand dress? I say this because both my daughters wanted to keep their wedding dresses intact. Both of them had dresses with long hems/trains. The hems of the dresses spent the whole day and evening on the floor and were filthy. I tried everything but couldn’t get the stains out. One had a silk dress and one had a synthetic dress.
I am another dressmaker that says it would be very difficult to alter the dress you are looking at.

Won’t professional dry cleaning clean your daughters’ dresses?

It didn’t with the first, so I didn’t try with the second,

Singersong · 14/07/2024 20:49

It would not be a straightforward job at all and you'd spend a lot of what you save.getting the work done. Would the sleeves be too tight? I doubt there's anything in them to be let out, same for the shoulders/armpits.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 14/07/2024 21:21

I had my silk dress professionally cleaned and the hem was still dirty

CurlewKate · 14/07/2024 21:23

I think it would be difficult, if not impossible. Sorry.

This - it looks like it’s a separate skirt and body suit from the description
