Is Gin & Tonic posh?!

Chiminea · 14/07/2024 10:03

Out for drinks with dh & two other couples. Dhs friend buys first round, I asked for a g&t in which he replies... "oooh very posh" other wives were drinking wine.
So is g&t posh? This wasn't a "craft" fashionable gin just gordons & schweeps!

No, it's just a spirit you can drink straight or with a mixer. There are some that are a bit more 'posh' , but ultimately it's only gin.

WingBingo · 14/07/2024 10:07

Depends on the circles you mix in I suppose.

work night out? Everyone is drinking it. Home town? Possibly viewed as posh.

Chiminea · 14/07/2024 10:08

Exactly, I always drink g&t. Usually Beefeater or Gordons.

G&t is a classic every man drink.

I'd say Wine is way posher.

MartyFunkhouser · 14/07/2024 10:08

Not even slightly.

Regalia · 14/07/2024 10:08

God, no. Though of course you can specify a gin type and a tonic type.

Chiminea · 14/07/2024 10:13

It got the discussion started at the table though! We all unanimously agreed that at Henley, Wimbledon etc the drinks are pimms or champagne, g&t wouldn't make the cut!

Not posh = Gordon's and Schwepps.

Posh = Latest herbal botanical gin containing tincture of stinging nettles, parsnips and strawberries grown by trained Llamas in the foothills of the Andes and Fever Tree tonic water.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/07/2024 10:16

It's not impossible, but it's harder to get a G&T wrong, whereas there is some real old shite out there being flogged as wine and plenty of people who expect and want their wine to be very sweet or incredibly acrid.

I'd say picking a drink that is consistent is being sensible and not posh in that sense, as you aren't going to be chucking a tenner away on some random glass of something.

But I quite like gin and think Pimms is a waste of perfectly good fruit.

Peoneve · 14/07/2024 10:16

posher than vodka and tonic

longdistanceclaraclara · 14/07/2024 10:17

No

StripedPiggy · 14/07/2024 10:18

No, of course not. Not these days, anyway.

But, back in the 1980s when I was working in pubs in a small working class town G&T would certainly have been considered ‘posh’, as would wine. Almost all men drank pints of beer. Women would generally drink halves of lager (sometimes with a dash of lime or blackcurrant cordial) Martini / Cinzano & lemonade or soft drinks. We did sell some G&T & wine, but not much.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/07/2024 10:20

Is this actually about cost? Is a G&T more expensive than a glass of wine in the pub you were in?

Chiminea · 14/07/2024 10:24

No as the other wives were drinking NZ sauv blanc! My drink would have been 2 quid cheaper!

Meadowfinch · 14/07/2024 10:29

No. It's just a drink. It could be rough cheap gin & supermarket tonic in a grubby mug or it could be craft gin and quality tonic in a hand blown glass with lime and ice, but it's still G&T. It isn't difficult to make.

People can be very odd 🙂

I read something once that said as gin was so easy to make the poorest people used to make it at home and it had to be banned due to the trouble it caused! Definitely not posh in origin.

I think it had a posh phase of colonials drinking it for the quinine during empire but now it's just a run of the mill drink.

DisneyHag · 14/07/2024 10:52

As @NeverDropYourMooncup indicates, it’s my drink of choice when I’m somewhere where I can’t be certain of the quality of the wine … I’d order a G&T during the interval at a theatre, before a concert, impromptu drinks in a random pub.

I much prefer red wine - but it needs to be something specific. And a G&T won’t ruin your outfit if some fool bumps into you and your full glass.

TheChosenTwo · 14/07/2024 11:00

Gordon’s gin is not posh!
I mean my standard order is a pint of lager, I’m not posh either 😂
My friend will only drink Hendricks or silent pool type gin with fever tree mixers - I don’t know that it qualifies as posh but it’s certainly expensive!!

IrritableVowel · 14/07/2024 11:05

You can buy it in a tin from Lidl 😂

That's what I would consider posh too or even Bombay Sapphire is a step above Gordons. Tbh I've had posh, craft gins with fever tree tonic but nothing beats Gordons & schweeps!

I've tried some posh Gins and Gordon's is definitely the best with any type of mixer , expensive or supermarket own brand . Ice and a slice , lovely.

Regalia · 14/07/2024 11:33

I think Schweppes ruins any kind of gin, it’s so sweet, it drowns it.

mitogoshi · 14/07/2024 11:34

It's every man's type drink around here, certainly not posh, in fact I would say wine in posher

Peoneve · 14/07/2024 12:02

It is actually a victim of snobs
it is a much better tonic with a London gin than the new botanical tonics
