Sliding doors moment; Trump shot

Does anyone else feel like they'd be waking up to a very different world and future this morning if the gun man had actually killed Trump?

It feels like we're part of a movie where someone has gone back in time to kill a man before he becomes president (to save the future), but doesn't manage to do it.

Mmm, interesting. I hadn't thought about it in a "Back to the Future" sense, but I am relieved that it seems to have been a disgruntled American shooter. Can you imagine the fallout if it was, say, orchestrated by Iran or North Korea?

The dead zone - 1983 film with Christopher Walken.

This could be a 'shot that was heard around the world' moment. World war 1 was started by an assassination - I know trump survived but this will probably mean he wins.....

I kind of get what you mean. But I think if he had been killed the fall out would be huge. Lots of violence and more death would ensue I think.

BMW6 · 14/07/2024 10:14

Yes, I think if the attempt had been successful then a Civil War would be a real possibility.

As it is I think this has won him the election.

Hence one wonders if it was staged. I mean, the shooter was unbelievably close. How?

longdistanceclaraclara · 14/07/2024 10:25

How did it happen with the security that goes with him? The world is mad.

Takoneko · 14/07/2024 10:30

He was shot in the ear. It would be way too risky to stage that.

I actually find the time travel talk pretty morally repugnant. I dislike Trump as much as the next person but an attempt to assassinate a political figure is always a stain on democracy. The idea that maybe this is some kind of rescue mission from the future, even if not meant seriously, is essentially a way of saying you think he deserves to be assassinated.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/07/2024 10:32

Yes, I started a thread on books about this - the Dead Zone, great read

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 14/07/2024 10:32

Hasn’t someone died? Their family have had a sliding door moment. I’m upset for the family who have lost someone, to be hearing the talk about how lucky it was the shooter failed.

And two people critically ill.

jollygreenpea · 14/07/2024 11:54

I think he was going to win anyway given the state of Biden's metal capacity, or lack off.
I'm no Trump fan but it goes against democracy to assassinate the people that don't share your views.

I wish the two people who are critically ill well and they recover, and sympathy to the family of the person killed.

SuePreemly · 14/07/2024 11:57

I can't help but feel the timing is very convenient considering the increasing noise around Trumps paedophile links. It does feel like a set up, somehow, but maybe that's my cynical brain.

I am sorry for those hurt and overall glad the shooter didn't kill Trump. The fallout from it would have potentially been really severe

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/07/2024 12:13

Cynical me did think it could be staged, wouldn't put anything past him.

But to stage it and people be killed, would he really go that far? Part of me thinks he would.

February 10, 2024 Reuters:
'Trump vows to undo Biden gun restrictions if re-elected.'

Hmmm, might think about reviewing that?

No he won't. The gun control debate is not a logical one.

Not a chance. Hell use it as a reason to do the exact opposite.

It's awful but when I first heard I had a brief moment of "I wish they succeeded". But, if they had, I genuinely think the US would have descended into civil war.

Non of the possible outcomes of this and the election are good, are they?
