Cut newborn’s finger tip, feel terrible

Posting here for traffic

I stupidly used the baby nail clippers to cut my 4 week old’s finger nails. I’ve learned my lesson to use the nail file only!

Unfortunately I cut the tip of his finger with them. He was so upset (so was I) and he bled for 10 mins or so. He is now quite happy.

I’m so worried it’ll get infected. What can I do to avoid infection? Pic attached

I've done it to both my kids. Couldn't get on with baby nail files. He'll be ok.

I don't know how all you numptys have managed to butcher your babies, and some of you multiple times!!4 kids here and not done this .

They'll be knocking on your door with the medal any time soon Confused

And it's numpties not numptys

OP please don’t say that you would never forgive your DP. That is so unfair. It was a total accident and I am sure he is not saying that about you. Your child will no doubt have an accident under his care at some point in his life and you cannot behave like that.

I did this to my first born at about 6 months old. I cried more than she did. Actually took her to the local minor injuries as I was so panicked. They only see kids from a year old and the receptionist was about to turn us away when a lovely nurse came out and took pity on me.

She ended up putting the world's smallest steri strip on her tiny finger, assuring me I wasn't the first parent to do this and also advising me to bite them next time!

It was followed up with a call from a Health Visitor who said exactly the same things.

Baby will be fine!

And yes, avoid this in the future by biting his nails when he's feeding

Andtheworldwentwhite · 14/07/2024 17:28

I did this. Two day old baby. I phoned my sister in tears. She said it is easier to bite the nails off. Keep it clean. And give ur self a break. Ur doing a good job. Don’t worry the baby will be fine. ❤️❤️❤️

I traumatised myself doing this to DS1 and I did cry more than him. He is now 20 and blissfully unaware that this ever happened.

I did this to my two year old recently .it was awful she screamed for about 10 mins but the bleeding didn't stop for about two hours. It does heel quickly but took me weeks to stop feeling guilty. I was more hysterical than my daughter.

In future the electric files are best

You're probably one of the 'scruttys' that doesn't bother to cut your kids dirty nails then?
Five kids over here and I've done it too, along with the best of us.

I had my babies 20+ years ago but this was what I was told to do - nibble them as necessary

mollyfolk · 14/07/2024 23:01

Oh I have done it. It’s awful. I was too traumatised to ever cut their nails again. My husband used to nibble on them to trim them!

LegArmpits · 14/07/2024 23:09

Oh god I did this, she was asleep in her cot and I thought it was the perfect time. I can still remember her cry!

She's 17 now and it clearly traumatised her as she's been a right dickhead these last few years 😂😂
