Jigsaw Puzzles

In the last few years, since Lockdown actually, I have really got into doing jigsaw puzzles. I have even been given a proper board I can save them on whilst working on one. I've found a cheapy shop where I can buy a 500 piece puzzle for £6 so no great outlay. All happy until I mentioned my hobby to someone from a group I go to and she looked at me with a look of barely concealed contempt, and muttered something about 'all right for oldies'. The thing is I'm only 59, work part time because I looked after my mum until she died and can afford to do so. Is doing jigsaws a sign that I'm getting old before my time? I thought it was good for manual dexterity and keeping brain active but her comment has unnerved me a bit.

I'm 57 and I love jigsaws ! I do them whilst watching telly ......

Just ignore the haters 🤣🤣🤣

What a cow!!

It's better for your brain than zoning out in front of the TV.

Having 4 cats has stopped our family jigsawing Sad

Fuck em! I love jigsaws too, couldn’t give a shiny shite what anyone else thinks about it.

Thank you all. Not good at the tagging business on here. You have all cheered me up again. 😀

I'm 47. I love my jigsaws!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 13/07/2024 15:53

I'm 49 and have also been jigsawing regularly since lockdown. A jigsaw, The Archers omnibus and a pot of tea and I am in heaven.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/07/2024 15:54

I love doing them, too. There's a lovely jigsaw thread somewhere on here, with pictures of some gorgeous ones. I tend to buy them in charity shops, and donate them back afterwards.

gentlemum · 13/07/2024 15:55

I'm in my 30s and love jigsaws. I don't have much time for them with my kids but I've been doing them since a teenager. I don't think it's a hobby for 'oldies' at all.

I've recently got back to listening to the Archers after a long break. Currently finding lots of characters I've not come across before. I may pm you at some point if I get very confused!

Love jigsaws. Loved them as a child, still love them as an adult. Refuse to give a shit about what other people think about it!

Crochetpenguin · 13/07/2024 16:03

I love jigsaws. Remember doing them as a child with my grandparents and have done them ever since. My problem is I hate leaving an unfinished jigsaw. It's always ' I'll just do one more piece'!

saturnspinkhoop · 13/07/2024 16:05

That’s so rude of that person. I’m currently working on a jigsaw with my daughter. We are making painfully slow progress, but we are enjoying it.

Waitingfordoggo · 13/07/2024 16:08

I’m 46 and love jigsaws and Radio 4. I’m very active too though so getting more than enough exercise and don’t care what anyone thinks about what I do in my spare time.

HowardTJMoon · 13/07/2024 16:08

I'm mid-50s and I, too, love a good jigsaw. An hour or two with a 1,000 piece jigsaw and a podcast or audiobook to listen to is a delight.

I have set stages. 1, sort all the edges, 2 assemble the 'frame', 3 rough sort all other pieces by colour or section of the picture. 4 - 6 or 7 work through each section. Usually sky last because that is where I resort to looking at 'inny' and 'outy' bits of puzzle to see where they fit. Then it all fits together! 😂

Jigsaws and Archers is ace! (Although nearly the characters irritate me in one way or another!)

DustyLee123 · 13/07/2024 16:13

My teen does them with me.

ShillyShallySherbet · 13/07/2024 16:14

I love jigsaws and have done all my life! Definitely not for oldies.

FadedRed · 13/07/2024 16:17

How rude of her to make such a comment!
I also enjoy jigsaws and get them from charity shops for approx £3.
You need this, Op, printed on ‘business cards’ to hand out:

I think that if I'd mentioned my knitting projects, currently blankets for special care baby unit at hospital, the lady would have been minded to drive me to the nearest Care Home for the Elderly! I will just avoid her in future. You have all given me the reassurance I needed. Thank you one and all.

Have been doing them for years so they are definitely NOT an OAP thing.😁
Love Wasgij, discovered them in lockdown and now have loads.

thismummydrinksgin · 13/07/2024 17:18

I'm 41 and love jigsaws, my problem is sorting out a set up that can leave it out and doesn't hurt my back leaning over to do them! They actually got me through a very anxious time during covid - calmed my mind x

TonTonMacoute · 13/07/2024 17:19

I have loved doing jigsaws all my life, and still do. I am a member of the British Jigsaw Puzzle Library, and you can't get more old fogeyish than that!

DH and DS both enjoy contributing to my jigsaws, and IMO it's far better than scrolling mindlessly on your phone.

Shaunthesheep34 · 13/07/2024 17:28

I wonder what they would think of me, I'm 44, I love jigsaws, crochet, knitting , cross stitch and crosswords. Some of these things are classed as 'old people' hobbies but I don't care what people think and just ignore them.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/07/2024 17:32

Love a good jigsaw. Very therapeutic.
