Jigsaw Puzzles

In the last few years, since Lockdown actually, I have really got into doing jigsaw puzzles. I have even been given a proper board I can save them on whilst working on one. I've found a cheapy shop where I can buy a 500 piece puzzle for £6 so no great outlay. All happy until I mentioned my hobby to someone from a group I go to and she looked at me with a look of barely concealed contempt, and muttered something about 'all right for oldies'. The thing is I'm only 59, work part time because I looked after my mum until she died and can afford to do so. Is doing jigsaws a sign that I'm getting old before my time? I thought it was good for manual dexterity and keeping brain active but her comment has unnerved me a bit.

I'm really good at jigsaws, it took me only 6 months to complete the last one when the box said 3 to 8 years!

That joke is courtesy of my 10 yr old DS....

Charity shops are your friend for jigsaw puzzles. I volunteer in one and keep my mum supplied with puzzles at £3 a time on a rotating basis - when she's finished, I donate them back. There are so many lovely puzzles out there, mum is quire fussy and doesn't like anything twee like frolicking kittens, or the Thomas Kinkade style paintings, or Wasjigs, and 1000 pieces only.

I donate mine to the allotment near me, they have a puzzle shed! I don’t take from the shed, donate only 😂
im too sceptical about second hand puzzles after almost completing one of the 1992 Barcelona olympics and discovering 4 pieces were missing in a holiday house, scarred for life!
New only now, 1,000 pieces and I seem to have a specific type that I like. Nothing wishywashy, definitely no kittens or animals, no landscape paintings or the like. I like a really bold design from ravensburger or similar, the front doors one was a favourite.

@Hermitreader i hope you can see the outpouring of love for jigsaws you have ignited 😊I started a new one at the weekend and ordered another one after a picture in the other thread linked.

Thank you. Yes I am now feeling very loved up and I started a new puzzle on Saturday. So far the straight bits frame is completed so later today I will do some rough sorting of all the other pieces. Happy Puzzling Everyone! 😂

My lovely daughter made me a jigsaw advent calender last year, each parcel had a chocolate in too 😍

That’s so sweet! Which puzzle was it, did you know in advance? My husband did something similar for me last Christmas with Elena Essex - Christmas Cornucopia. Not a surprise for me though as I chose the puzzle and sorted it for him to put together (he hates doing puzzles)

I love jigsaw puzzles and got
into them in a big way during lockdown. My brother and his wife are also fans, and we do a lot of swapping between us. Our favourite brand is Pomegranate: lots of fine art and interesting designs.

Chocolateisameal · 15/07/2024 10:20

Could anyone suggest a good storage board please? I tried a jigsaw roll but couldn’t get on with it.

I do have some “help” with jigsaws sadly

We donate any that we don’t think we will do again , our local Tesco have a second hand book and jigsaw charity stand .

AlanBrendaCelia · 15/07/2024 10:52

I’m 51, DP is 50 and we do jigsaws. In fact just yesterday we were talking about needing to take the ones we have done to the charity shop, as there as so many boxes.

Like @RandomMess said, jigsaws can be challenging when you have cats. One of ours likes to sit on the jigsaw you are working on, and if you move her off of it, she’ll sit in the jigsaw box on top of the pieces.

Moonshiners · 15/07/2024 10:59

I love jigsaws always have. And I'm very cool so what does your dorky friend know. 😁

Puzzlemates from Argos is quite good. I even took it on holiday once when the weather was crap!!

DCINightingale · 15/07/2024 13:58

Love a jigsaw. I have a child free week coming up and a 2000 piece jigsaw I will be setting out to complete (I'm 39!)

We once got one from a charity shop which had a handwritten note in it saying "life is too short for this one". It made us laugh, we did it but it was hard going!

HectorGloop · 15/07/2024 14:08

DH is away this week and now I know what I will be doing to keep myself occupied, thanks OP!

I fear I may also be on the receiving end of feline help though....

I love my Portapuzzle mat. I prefer the look of the standard to the deluxe, because I prefer the flaps which open out to the side. The extra sorting boards are also really useful.

DeanElderberry · 15/07/2024 18:24

I'm currently dogless, but a cat and a dog tag-teaming can simplify ones jigsawing considerably, one friend to jump up on the table and knock pieces onto the floor, one to grab them and run away and chew them up.

It was one of father Christmas. I did post a pic too. I knew nothing about it until she gave it to me. I'm hoping she'll do the same again this year

TheBanffie · 15/07/2024 18:56

Love them - except a Marmite one which was shaped like a Marmite jar and patterned with multiple multicoloured Marmite jars. Way too difficult!

Oh yes! I did a baked bean once (on a round plate!) And it nearly killed me!
Loving the jigsaw love pn this thread! Spent my bank holiday today doing one!

Thanks to that person who posted about Karen Puzzles on Youtube! I had loads of stuff I needed to do over the last two days and I've done precisely nothing apart from watch her videos while doing my own jigsaw.

sheslittlebutfierce · 16/07/2024 13:03

DD2 is 36 next week. She has been a puzzler her whole life; can't see it changing now.
People are so damn judgy!

toastofthetown · 16/07/2024 20:46

If anyone has Amazon Prime, there are some pretty good Prime Day deals at the moment. Elena Essex have a couple of discounted puzzles (and Fruity Blush and Favourite Things were on my wishlist so have picked those up) albeit with a suspiciously high starting price. I was actually looking at puzzles this morning and I'm sure every EE 1000 piece puzzle was £18.99 then...

Other brands look like they have some pretty good discounts too, especially some Clementoni puzzles, and some of the Disney Ravensburger ones. Might be worth checking the price tracking on camelcamelcamel first though, to check the deal is actually a good one!

SustainableWombat · 20/07/2024 12:18

Has anyone got recommendations for a puzzle frame for a 1000-piece jigsaw (68 x 48 cm)?
Most of the frames I can find are 50 x 70 and I'm not sure if it would look odd to have a gap round the edge!
Eurographics seem to do a 68 x 48 frame - has anyone tried it?
