Jigsaw Puzzles

In the last few years, since Lockdown actually, I have really got into doing jigsaw puzzles. I have even been given a proper board I can save them on whilst working on one. I've found a cheapy shop where I can buy a 500 piece puzzle for £6 so no great outlay. All happy until I mentioned my hobby to someone from a group I go to and she looked at me with a look of barely concealed contempt, and muttered something about 'all right for oldies'. The thing is I'm only 59, work part time because I looked after my mum until she died and can afford to do so. Is doing jigsaws a sign that I'm getting old before my time? I thought it was good for manual dexterity and keeping brain active but her comment has unnerved me a bit.

I've recently got back to listening to the Archers after a long break. Currently finding lots of characters I've not come across before. I may pm you at some point if I get very confused!

You'd be most welcome! I love The Archers hence my user name!

My husband and I love doing them. I’m 48 and he is 45. It’s fine. They are miserable.

We went to a housewarming party recently and there was a jigsaw puzzle half done on the kitchen work top. Can't tell you what a crowd formed around that puzzle, everyone having a go.

I completely got the bug and bought one and can't leave it alone. I've noticed they're in all the charity shops for a couple of pounds so a relaxing and engaging little hobby for no money at all.

pudseypie · 13/07/2024 18:12

I'm 44 and love a jigsaw! I'm really rubbish at them so they take me months but I find them relaxing. I also buy them in our local charity shop, usually for £2 each, then donate them back when I finally finish them

Lovetotravel123 · 13/07/2024 18:16

I’m in my 40s and love them! So therapeutic. Ignore that person.

Musicaltheatremum · 13/07/2024 18:18

Oh, you've got me dreaming! I'm 61 in 2 weeks...I must start them again. You do them the same way I do!

MotherOfCrocodiles · 13/07/2024 18:19

I work with people in their early 20s and most of them love a jigsaw

My daughter is 21 and loves jigsaw puzzles. She is at Uni but when home there is always one on the go!

Kelly51 · 13/07/2024 18:27

I'm 51 and have done them for years, started when I was pregnant many years ago, I pass them to my DD25, she loves them too.

Nourishinghandcream · 13/07/2024 17:16

Have been doing them for years so they are definitely NOT an OAP thing.😁
Love Wasgij, discovered them in lockdown and now have loads.

Wasjigs are brilliant, a real brain exercise.

Beebumble2 · 13/07/2024 18:28

Oops I got the letters muddled! Wasgij 😂

People of all ages enjoy them. I've just discovered a new brand but they are a bit more expensive called Happily. I've got two so far both great

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 13/07/2024 18:30

I have an almost complete 1000 piece puzzle of a shop front at Beamish Museum underneath the table cloth. It's taken months to do but I love to fix a few pieces in when I get some time to do so. I have another waiting to start. I'm only 44 btw.

Naughty1205 · 13/07/2024 18:32

Have just poured myself a glass of wine and settling down to my jigsaw. Like you OP, I started during lockdown. I like the 1000 pieces Ravensburger ones, and currently doing 'The Tea House'. I feel relaxed, helps me focus and be mindful, and I forget all the shit for a while! Ignore the haters!

windysocks · 13/07/2024 18:37

My next door neighbour do them and I'm jealous! Im 52 and with work/kids/dogs don't have the time but it looks a really soothing hobby - enjoy it x

RaininSummer · 13/07/2024 18:39

I did some during the lockdowns as a mindful break from work screens. I have decided to always have on the go and sit there for 30 mins after work whilst dinner cooks to unwind from the day.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 13/07/2024 18:46

I'm under 40 and love my jigsaws. If they're pretty enough, my pre teen joins me. I've been taking a break (mainly because I'm trying to sell the 20 I have so far), but I plan to have an epic one on the go in the summer holidays.

You should check out Amazon, sometimes in the sales they have 1000 piece jigsaws for 6.99.

husbandcallsmepickle · 13/07/2024 18:54

I started loving jigsaw puzzles in my 20s, did loads during lockdown. I also really enjoy lego, have you tried any sets?

biscuitandcake · 13/07/2024 18:56

That's such a weird comment. It isn't even a hobby I would associate with being old (not saying that there is anything wrong with hobbies associated with older people, or that younger people shouldn't do them. Just I wouldn't put jigsaws in that category.
The only thing that makes them"old" maybe is because it involves staying in (like reading, watching TV, painting) rather than going out clubbing. But back in the day when I used to go to clubs a lot there were also evenings I spent in.

I got back into lego with my son. I find it very therapeutic.

BiscuityBoyle · 13/07/2024 18:58

I love a jigsaw. I wish I had a house big enough to leave one out all the time. I do them on the iPad!

A friend of mine has a lovely family tradition. Over Christmas they buy two identical jigsaws. Her and her daughter work together on one and her DH and son work on the other in a race.

BiscuityBoyle · 13/07/2024 18:59

I also heard that a jigsaw is very good if you struggle to sleep. Unlike a book or crossword you can’t think about it while not doing it.

AyrshireTryer · 13/07/2024 19:00

Love a jigsaw - charity shops are a good place to get them.
Reference the Archers - Alice is innocent!

Luckingfovely · 13/07/2024 19:02

I always, always, always have a jigsaw on the go.

A huge amount of my time and work is spent online, and I could not be without a hobby that wasn't digital, to give me some balance in my life.

End of a long day, jigsaw, audiobook, glass of something: resetting perfection.
