Neighbours racing pigeons

My NDN owns racing pigeons which live in a large shed in his back garden. He lets them out to fly the neighbourhood several times a day and each time they poo everywhere. I mean everywhere. Not only are the streets full of poo, but also all of the cars on the whole road, all of my childrens outdoor toys and even when I hang out washing I have to redo half of it. I’ve had enough of not being able to live comfortably and needing to wash everything every day, or using my tumble dryer because the wash line is caked in poo. My neighbour doesn’t care, his house and garden are covered and it doesn’t bother him. Several neighbours have complained and asked him to only let them out at certain times so we can all enjoy our gardens, but he deliberately waits until they are outside to let the pigeons out. Short of moving house or covering my entire house and garden in tarpauling, is there anything I can do?

Would environmental health be able to advise you?

Doggymummar · 13/07/2024 15:29

I wonder if you need a license to keep them? My oh comes from a alternative family and they kept a horse in the back garden of their council house when he was a kid. Neighbours complained and called RSPCA who said it was kept in great conditions so there was nothing they could do, maybe ask for a welfare check on them by rspcb ?

Are there any rules at the moment because of the current bird flu problems? Google the law regarding this.

Lure them into your garden with food then get making pigeon pies? 😋

How ever many does he have? Sounds awful. I would speak to environmental health and see what their opinion is.

Can you fight back by getting a pack of ferrets?

Sorrytobecrazy · 13/07/2024 19:05

Thanks everyone (and thanks for making me laugh 😄)
I didn’t think of environmental health so I’ll get onto them on Monday.
He has at least 30 of them and they fly around in a group above the houses, when he moved in he only had a couple, he’s bought the rest recently.
it’s not hygienic or fair for anyone to clean and one of the neighbours cars were damaged because the pigeon poo ruined the paint work. NDN response was: that’s what birds do. It should be illegal to keep pigeons as pets.

Racing pigeons should be kept on allotments if that's what people want to do. They're unsuitable for back yards or gardens if it's a built up area.

It's a cruel sport anyway. A very large percentage die and get lost and the keepers employ unpleasant techniques in order to get them to return home. I rescued a lost one last year and got in touch with the owner via Facebook, but didn't even receive a reply. They're just disposable objects to these people.
