WFT happened to my toe?

went on holiday in may. while standing still at the bathroom mirror in the hotel in the evening taking my make up off (with flip flops on) i had a sudden really intense and sharp pain in my fourth toe. had a look and there was nothing there, no redness, the nail looked fine, the pain lasted about a minute and gradually went away. woke up in the middle of the night to terrible throbbing pain in the same toe - i've broken a toe before and this pain was worse than that - i had to neck some ibuprofen to get any sleep. we were flying home the next day and i remember thinking oh shit, how will i walk on it tomorrow? but in the morning it was absolutely fine, no pain at all, no bruising.
fast forward to now and the toenail just fell off, and there's clearly a bit of the nail bed underneath that was injured a few months back, it's all bumpy and weird and gnarly. but no bruise, so what on earth happened? i'm not worried obv but it's just so confusing, how i could have injured it that badly just standing still?

In the heat of the moment I often don’t notice I’ve done something until much later. Gardening is where I get most damage. Washing hands and arms later I often find scratches, some quite deep with dried blood.

My guess for your damage would be maybe you caught your foot briefly on perhaps the edge of a pavement or similar. At the time you were distracted by more important things.

If you know a good podiatrist you could get it looked at, and maybe an opinion as to what happened, and some treatment.

Nails usually grow back, but toenails are very slow growing.

omg haha, I thought you meant your toe had just evaporated into thin air 🤣🤣🤣

OP this sounds like an episode of gout that my friend had. They could not believe that despite the amount of pain they were in there was nothing visible.

I ended up calling 111 for her as she was in so much pain.

I think she was initially worried that she was losing her mind due to the lack of visible cues.

A few days later her toe did begin to look a little red and feel a little hotter, but even even then only if you looked closely.

Gout most commonly begins in the big toe, but it's not unusual for it to be in other toes instead, and can even be elsewhere like the ankle or knee.

DP has a little toenail that, slowly and gradually, gets thicker and thicker and uglier and uglier until eventually it gets pulled off by me because I'm impatient falls off altogether, to reveal a beautiful shiny newborn toenail growing underneath. It takes several years to complete this cycle, and the denouement is always highly satisfying.

This isn't strictly relevant, I just wanted to share.

I know someone who has a similar thing with their eye recently and it turned out to be a bacterial infection and it was eating his cornea!! 😱
But think you'd have noticed if it was flesh eating bacterial infection, so also not strictly relevant...

Just googled gout and that's a better fit so my money is on pp suggestion of that, though don't think it explains the toenail <helpful> 😁
