What’s your work doing with regards to the football?

Just heard on the radio some work places are closing early on Sunday to let their employees get ready for the game, some are opening later to let their employees recover.

what’s your work doing?

Mines doing nothing and made it clear anyone not coming in will be in big trouble, I feel short changed, like everyone is celebrating this event and not us!

I work at a university gym. We usually close at 10pm on a Sunday but are closing at 7pm this week. I suspect some of the regulars will be annoyed they can't have their usual Sunday night swim.

I work in Financial Services and nothing has been said so assuming it’s 9am start as normal. I’m on annual leave next week anyway.

DS school has finished for the summer but I’m a governor at a different school and we’ve done the 10am start in a desperate attempt to keep our attendance figures up. It’s a school with lots of attendance issues- think parents refusing to do the school run in the rain etc- and we did the same when the lionesses were in the final.

Its the timing which is a challenge- Wimbledon final isn’t a guaranteed late night for a primary school age child but a 8pm match is.

I love football and can’t wait!

You didn’t do the same when the lionesses were in the final because it was on 31st July. Why lie to make a point?

Sandyankles · 13/07/2024 06:42

I’m really surprised that schools are opening late. Why would a football match the previous evening, that the majority of people won’t be watching, mean that kids can’t get into school on time? Really poor message about priorities.

I would also like to see more footballers speaking out about domestic violence.

WheresMyBro · 13/07/2024 06:53

Nothing. I'd be miffed if my kids had to miss their clubs on Monday evening because my work hours had been shifted by an hour or two so that some people can nurse hangovers before starting work for the day.

I hope police are out in force with breathalysers on Monday morning.

My school is opening at normal time. Tbh it never would have occurred to me that workplaces would open late. It's ridiculous imo. Watch the match (if you want), have a few beers, then don't be a wuss and go into work as normal. That's what I'll be doing. It's a bloody football match, not a once-in-a-lifetime event!

It probably is a once in a lifetime event! 😂

Strewth. It's a load of ludicrously overpaid men kicking a ball around for a bit.

People need to get a fucking grip.

This. It's utterly ridiculous that people are getting so riled up about this.

What special arrangements did they make when the Lionesses were in the final? It should match that.

Ibiza2004 · 13/07/2024 07:41

My husbands manager told them all on a zoom meeting that if they wanted to start work a couple of hours later on the Monday morning then to do it and enjoy the football

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/07/2024 07:44

Our boss has kindly said she doesn’t want anyone in the office or online at home before 11am Monday.
she’s very into the footy

sorry I got the wrong event but we did it for the previous semi final/final (men’s). We discussed it and have it written down in the meeting minutes we would do the same if the Lionesses were in the same position during term time and would treat rugby world cups or similar in the same way. Basically the late start rule isn’t only for men’s football but all major sports finals involving England in any popular sport that is likely to lead to dropped attendance.

My sincere apologies for making a mistake, I hope I have explained it sufficiently.

Is she giving everyone time off, or is she expecting everyone, football fan or not, to move their working hours at short notice to accommodate her wanting to start later because of the football?

protectoroftherealm · 13/07/2024 07:51

We're closed over weekends anyway and on Monday we have the option of holidays, unpaid leave or working! Looking forward to Sunday and I'll be going in!

no we’ll all be working 2h less on Monday. She wants people to have a lie in regardless of their interest (or not) in the football.

littleredcaravan · 13/07/2024 07:56

It's a nice gesture if workplaces have offered later starts but I don't see why people are up in arms about those that haven't.

People stay up late to watch a movie, do hobbies, theatre, go out for dinner etc... why would watching a game of football that will end at a normal time for a night game need a late start the next day?

You can have a couple of beers and watch the game and be in bed ready for work the next day without any drama 🤷🏼‍♀️

2 hrs free 'holiday' is great, and generous - enjoy your lie-in! It's where there's an expectation that disrupting everyone's work patterns become some (even if a majority) would prefer their day to shift, or to lose a couple of hours pay, to accommodate self-inflicted sore heads, that I have an issue with.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/07/2024 08:31

Nothing, we don’t work weekends anyway and I could care less about football but if I was given a late start on Monday, I’d accept it with open arms 😂. I can understand primary schools as the kids may be up late but for high schools and adults, it’s just a slightly late bedtime unless it’s for people nursing hangovers which seems a bit daft.

MrsStottlemeyer · 12/07/2024 18:05

What does getting ready for the game involve?

This 😂😂😂😂
Presumably preloading on the beers

Whatsthesituation · 13/07/2024 08:36

Iam self employed so I haven't booked any jobs in on Monday.

Longma · 13/07/2024 08:41

I teach in an infant school. my schools is just normal hours on Monday. We will no doubt have some over tired children but it's the last week of term so we have a bit of flexibility with the curriculum we can put into action.

Dh's work haven't said anything either, though for the women's football they were told they could come in later than normal the next day. But it was their head of HR who announced that and she was the only one who took up the offer. Head of HR is on holiday last week and next so nothing has been put out about it and no one has asked about it - Dh only mentioned this as I asked him for this post.

RabbitsRock · 13/07/2024 08:58

RuthW a lot of stores close on Easter Sunday but I wouldn’t expect any to close on Good Friday.

RabbitsRock · 13/07/2024 09:01

Where I work closes at 4 on Sundays anyway.

Underlig · 13/07/2024 09:03

I will be working as normal on Sunday. There’s no way the company could change the working pattern. The work needs doing at the time it needs doing.

Coconutter24 · 13/07/2024 09:08

It’s a bit ridiculous opening places later on the Monday because of a late night Sunday if you can’t hack it go to bed, I’m sure though many times in a year people will go to bed past 11pm. I read somewhere it’s due to people drinking but even if you have 10 pints that evening and get to work for 10am instead of 8am you’ll still have alcohol in your system so potentially drink driving. Why does it have to be booze fuelled for many? Can they not enjoy the game with a couple of drinks knowing they have responsibilities the next day?
