What’s your work doing with regards to the football?

Just heard on the radio some work places are closing early on Sunday to let their employees get ready for the game, some are opening later to let their employees recover.

what’s your work doing?

Mines doing nothing and made it clear anyone not coming in will be in big trouble, I feel short changed, like everyone is celebrating this event and not us!

Everyone wants it.. what if the shops are closed, trains not running, schools closed, hospitals shut. Nah, if people want it off they can book it off. We don't all care about football. Plus we didn't get time off when the women's team won the euros.

Doggymummar · 12/07/2024 18:34

My boss is on holiday in Canada so probably doesn't know, we are also in Scotland so don't much care either. It finishes about ten, it's not exactly late.

Redhairandhottubs · 12/07/2024 18:35

I think it's a bit ridiculous that businesses and schools are opening late just to people can get pissed on Sunday night! I'm good with anywhere that's open on Sunday night choosing to close so that staff can actually watch the match, but adults should really be able to watch it without drinking so excessively they can't go to work in the morning. If you really need to get pissed, book the morning off. Otherwise just have a couple of beers and watch the match.

VolvoFan · 12/07/2024 18:36

Nothing these days. When we worked in an office, we had a big screen so that kickyball fans could watch the matches. Nowadays, I'll admit, we're all miserable bastards and couldn't give a shit. I do secretly hope England wins the final.

SummerSummeySun · 12/07/2024 18:37

2 years ago the women were in the finals AND WON none of this half day or day off chat then was there!?

My work is doing nothing. We're closed on Sundays. Some of the clients I work with have told me they are off Monday so ill have an easier day but being scottish myself I don't give a hoot...

Its actually very likely that the school will be opening late for the pupils but will expect the staff to be there at the normal opening time.

I don't get what there is to prepare or recover from. It's a football match. Sit on sofa, stare at football on TV.

Hoppinggreen · 12/07/2024 18:41

Jesus, no wonder this country is a mess.
Businesses are planning on opening later because they expect people (men) to be hung over due to a football game?
Being too hungover to turn up to work should be a sacking offence

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 12/07/2024 18:27

It's just a football game. Lots of employees will still be working, such as my husband. Or do you think we don't need the police on Sunday because some blokes are kicking a ball around??

Sadly, I imagine demand for the police might be pretty high during and after the match.

Hooligans, fights, drunk people, domestic violence, drink driving etc.

NextFriYAY · 12/07/2024 18:43

I do not get the mania - like @hanahsaunt said, we don’t go bonkers when, say, England’s rugby team reach the RWC. Or we do well in the cricket.

Madness.

I don't get all the anger.

I don't think it's anger. Just sheer amazement at the ridiculousness of it.

MrsStottlemeyer · 12/07/2024 18:05

What does getting ready for the game involve?

Starting a BBQ, getting some drinking on ice, snacks or finger food in, basically anything you'd do for a gathering if you ain't a miserable fucker and like any excuse for a bit of a party 🎉 🥳

Hoppinggreen · 12/07/2024 18:25

Why would anywhere have to open later on Monday, won't it be finished around 10?

possibly 11

AdaColeman · 12/07/2024 18:47

It's only a game of football, no need for so much fuss, and I definitely don't think that there should be a Bank Holiday declared if we should win. That would be totally ridiculous!

FoleyHuck · 12/07/2024 18:48

I'm on Maternity Leave anyway, but my work is closed Monday because it's a public holiday here in Jersey due to the King and Queen visiting. A fortuitous coincidence for England fans!

JuiceBoxJuggler · 12/07/2024 18:48

This is silly, you are jealous - it's not a bank holiday etc. it's just football. I think everyone should work their assigned shift - it's not like England will win anyway.

Chartreux · 12/07/2024 18:51

Nothing. I've got a management meeting at 9.30 a.m. It doesn't bother me - not sure if I'll even watch the match - but I'm quite looking forward to seeing what sort of state some of my colleagues will be in.

That's what I'm wondering. I'll be at work at 8 am on Monday as usual (not watching the football as I hate it, but even if I did, why would I need to go to work later?)

This country needs any hope of positivity it can get at the moment, why do some people insist on shitting on everything?

I don't think it matters what it is tbh, anything that gives people a bit of a boost can only be a good thing.

EasterlyDirections · 12/07/2024 18:52

Nothing here but ours is very flexible normally (no weekend working though). I think it's great that those employers who can are giving their staff time off to watch it, it's a huge event.

TodayForTomorrow · 12/07/2024 18:55

They've cancelled morning briefing so that we don't have to be in so early. It's only 15 minutes but I appreciate the gesture.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 12/07/2024 19:00

My work is opening 3 hours later on Monday. I don't even care about the football, but I'll take the three hours off!

By boost do you mean an excuse to get pissed the night before work?
This country has an real alcohol issue

Huifen · 12/07/2024 19:03

Nothing we will all be at work as normal on Monday morning. My son's school is offering a late start which I am not very impressed with. It's football - cannot understand why it would warrant this reaction.
