What’s your work doing with regards to the football?

Just heard on the radio some work places are closing early on Sunday to let their employees get ready for the game, some are opening later to let their employees recover.

what’s your work doing?

Mines doing nothing and made it clear anyone not coming in will be in big trouble, I feel short changed, like everyone is celebrating this event and not us!

By boost do you mean an excuse to get pissed the night before work?
This country has an real alcohol issue

It's perfectly possible to enjoy yourself without getting drunk you know. In my circles at least, not sure about yours.

Lovelynames123 · 12/07/2024 19:11

I'm not opening late on Monday but I am expecting 1 staff member to be hungover, she'll cope and we'll all laugh at her! Some local schools are having a 10am start no penalties if you want, but not ours as far as I know...

FourChimneys · 12/07/2024 19:15

I run my own business, and doubt very much if my Monday morning clients will cancel. They have paid in advance so their loss if they do.

In which case why are some places opening late on Monday?
I will be watching and enjoying the football but won't be drunk and neither will DH
We are actually making the same point here I think

halava · 12/07/2024 19:23

Ah who cares. But it'll be hard on the Spanish - they don't usually go out until about 10pm so it'll be an hour earlier for them and up all night if they win ahem.

Bet they won't be wringing any hands win or lose, it's the difference between an uptight nation like ours and a Mediterranean one.

Bet the bars in Berlin will be open all hours too before, during and after the match.

Mothersruin123 · 12/07/2024 19:27

Cynical me would suggest that Tesco Extra are closing early not to let their staff watch the game, but because they're not expecting many customers and therefore won't make any money?

VenusClapTrap · 12/07/2024 19:35

I’ll be working as normal on Monday morning because animals still need feeding. Not that I care about football anyway.

I’ve booked a table at a restaurant that’s hard to get a table at for Sunday at 8pm - unheard of normally to ring up a few days before and get one. I had a hunch they’d have a few cancellations, and was right!

Blueemeraldagain · 12/07/2024 19:45

I’m a teacher so it won’t affect me however this “race to the bottom” mentality is so depressing. Maybe if the country are given a bank holiday, half day or whatever then it will follow suit for other events? Although it can’t really be claimed that tennis (even the holy Wimbledon) has the same following as the Euros or World Cup- and I say that as a fan of neither!

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 12/07/2024 20:14

No late starts for us. Markets don't close because of a ball game. I would cheerfully accept a bank holiday if they win though.

Twilightstarbright · 12/07/2024 20:15

I work in Financial Services and nothing has been said so assuming it’s 9am start as normal. I’m on annual leave next week anyway.

DS school has finished for the summer but I’m a governor at a different school and we’ve done the 10am start in a desperate attempt to keep our attendance figures up. It’s a school with lots of attendance issues- think parents refusing to do the school run in the rain etc- and we did the same when the lionesses were in the final.

Its the timing which is a challenge- Wimbledon final isn’t a guaranteed late night for a primary school age child but a 8pm match is.

I love football and can’t wait!

giggly · 12/07/2024 20:17

We will be eating paella and Spanish tapas in the vain hope that Spain will hump England.

Ghost2 · 12/07/2024 20:19

I'll find out Sunday evening as it's my first shift back but I'm not expecting much. I'll probably have to watch it on the work phone whilst working

Crunchymum · 12/07/2024 20:33

Email went round yesterday offering people the option of AL (we're a global company and even if the whole UK cohort took AL - which they won't - operations won't be affected). It was clear AL had to be booked by COB today though!!

This is pathetic

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/07/2024 20:37

What?! “Recover”? So you’re basically saying that people should have a day off or go into work later because they plan to get pissed after a sporting event?

Don’t be silly.

celandiney · 12/07/2024 20:49

I would really like time off when the latest book by my favourite author comes out - any chance of that does anyone think?
And presumably people who do come into work as usual and children who are at school at the regular time will get TIL for future use tor the things they care about...

TakeOnFlea · 12/07/2024 20:55

"I would really like time off when the latest book by my favourite author comes out - any chance of that does anyone think?"

Is your favourite author the same as every reader in England's favourite author and do all of those readers have to read the book on Sunday night until 10/11pm? Including children?

No? Thought not. Fucking stupid comparisons on these threads 🤣

Lighten up jeez

Rowgtfc72 · 12/07/2024 20:59

My workplace is tight and doesn't usually give an inch.
We can go in at 8am instead of 6am if we choose.
Gobsmacked.

celandiney · 12/07/2024 21:10

@TakeOnFlea
😁 I'm not looking for time off for the whole country - just for me.
Football fans get extra time off to do the thing they want to do, I would also like extra time off to do the thing I want to do.
Seems simple enough (and fairly light hearted?)
No-one has to watch football til 11o'clock at night anyway - and even if they do it shouldn't be a big deal resulting in having to recover the next day, surely?

TakeOnFlea · 12/07/2024 21:11

"😁 I'm not looking for time off for the whole country - just for me."

Fair enough 🤣 that's a sickie then. Go for it!

Shushquite · 12/07/2024 21:18

I'm happy for those who get off on Monday! I'm actually picking up a bank shift because I'm personally not into football. But I love the atmosphere people create and to share, the up and down would be nice.

Instead I will look forward to the travel home. Hopefully, I would see more happy/ excited people on my commute.

Nothing . The NHS doesn’t stop for bank holidays, coronations , football etc

And will likely be even busier with domestic violence being at an all time high no matter the result.
I am a football fan but hate what it does with excessive emotion. I was in hospital in 2022 when England lost in the QFs in the World Cup, I kid you not, the women's ward was dispersed all around the hospital to make way for incoming 'victims' of football violence.

RuthW · 12/07/2024 12:10

I think it's disgusting Tesco shut for football but not Christmas Day and Good Friday.

My work is closed anyway on Sunday but would be carrying on as normal if it wasn't.

Umm I've worked at Tesco for a long time and they don't open Christmas Day. Big stores are shut Easter Sunday as well.

taybert · 12/07/2024 21:40

I work in healthcare and we can’t close or say be in late. But I’m not mad at places that make special arrangements- I’ve worked at lots of times when other people haven’t- nights, weekends, Christmas Day, a pandemic… I chose a career with little flexibility, but I always knew that was the case. Yes it’s overpaid men kicking a ball, one can be reductive about anything, but a win would be a nice thing and we could do with some nice things.

As someone who teaches a vulnerable section of children from a vulnerable section of families, I witness your point about domestic violence close at hand. I, perhaps naively, hope that raising the profile of international football, particularly between employers and employees, might lead to a down turn in these statistics.

i would also love to see a sequel to the admirable “are you fit to wear the shirt/not in my shirt” campaigns extend explicitly to domestic violence
