Anyone else who doesn’t give two shits about football?

I don’t care about any sports. To me it’s a load of overpaid tossers kicking a ball. That’s it.

I don’t have sports cos it’s cool. I just hate it especially since it was my dad’s entire identity and remember being dragged to the pub on multiple occasions so he can “watch the footy and have a pint”. Boring

Facebook is all “it’s coming home” blah blah blah.

I. Don’t. Care.

Football makes me feel very depressed- the sound of the crowd, the weird greenness of the pitch, the overpaid people running around kicking a ball like what they are doing is something important. I hate the whole thing.

It equally amazes and concerns me that it’s so popular. Do other people not find it depressing?

Yep. I'm sick of the news being taken up with shots of beery blokes bellowing in pubs, of losing track of my favourite programmes, of the hysteria over it. Who decided we all want to watch sport?! Why can't a single channel show all sport (free) and leave the rest of us to our choice of programmes?!

MrsStottlemeyer · 12/07/2024 08:18

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles
That made me laugh, Tipping point, detective programmes and football (not in that order) are my 12 year olds favourite things!

smellsfishy · 12/07/2024 08:19

I only like the goals which meant I had a good snooze through the majority of the England semi final. About 15 mins of the 90 is exciting the rest -not so much.

I like sport, but tennis / rugby / athletics etc are a far better watch on TV. I'm not keen on cricket either, especially test matches. I am looking forward to the Olympics. (I did like Ted Lasso and Welcome to Wrexham GrinFootball)

BigDahliaFan · 12/07/2024 08:21

Don’t mind internationals, quite enjoy watching them. But the premier leagues…the mood that dh gets in before Man City plays. The irony is when we got together I had no idea he had any interest in football as Man City were shit. Then they got good and everything has to be planned round big matches…luckily he doesn’t want to watch them all.

IncompleteSenten · 12/07/2024 08:22

I don't give a shit either but anything that gives anyone a bit of enjoyment in life is great imo.

Most of the things I love would bore others to death.

Selfishly, I do wish it wasn't pushed in the media as the best and most important thing ever, headline news, hours of coverage everywhere etc but I assume that just shows how many people are interested. Give the people what they want sort of thing.

MrsStottlemeyer · 12/07/2024 08:25

I cannot concentrate on a football match and think they should cut out all the fannying about and just have penalties.

DH and three out of four children love it watching and playing. I try really hard to pay attention when the DC are playing but it's difficult.

All the in laws keep WhatsApping with banter about how they want England to lose and apologising to me as I am English. They don't get how much I just don't care.

Frowningprovidence · 12/07/2024 08:26

I am not a huge sport fan but do watch the odd match off all sorts. I dont quite get footballs status as there are other sports that are more interesting to watch. Faster action, more goals etc.

But I'm glad it makes others happy.

Startingagainandagain · 12/07/2024 08:35

Don't care either.

Boring game with overpaid divas...

I also detest the poor behaviour that too many football fans still display.

But I think if it helps lift the mood of the nation then why not.

I think the Lionesses did a lot to bring back real sportsmanship and team spirit into sports and make good role models, not so sure about the men's team.

I won't be watching anyway. I never do.

Well obviously not ,it has huge followings around the world.

hanahsaunt · 12/07/2024 08:39

I don't watch football as I find it deathly dull. I don't care about the premier league but can make passing conversation because dh and sons are heavily invested. What I can't stand and hate with every fibre of my being is National Football. It's hard to ignore when even on the Today programme a semi final match was the top news story of all the headlines and references were shoe horned in to every possible story. It's not news, it's sports news and should stay in its alloted slot. I hate it being everywhere all the time and cannot wish them well because then it will be dragged on for even longer.

Lansonmaid · 12/07/2024 08:41

I'm a rugby fan myself, more annoyed that I can't watch England v All Blacks on Saturday as I don't have Sky . Totally not interested in football but appreciate I seem to be in a minority in the country.....Might be a good evening to go to the gym or swim as I imagine a load of people will be glued to the TV.

RainintheDesert · 12/07/2024 08:06

Football these days is so boring. I don't bother anymore. VAR is just one reason I hate it.

It's just awful now. Don't know why people bother.

The men's team are a bunch of overpaid diving cheats. That penalty the other night was a disgrace.

There was something more noble about the women's team winning. I won't be cheering for the men's

AnneElliott · 12/07/2024 08:45

I'm not interested in- like the op my dad and brother were obsessed and if their team lost there was an awful atmosphere at home on a Saturday afternoon.

DH doesn't really follow it either although he'll watch it if there's nothing else on! And luckily DS doesn't like it either!

What annoys me is the cost of the policing that falls to taxpayers. Grown men behaving so badly that the police have to spend our money keeping them apart. No other sport is really like that and football is the one that really puts pressure on their resources and budgets.

Football fans (not all but many) behave disgracefully. Because the PL brings in so much money in tax, policing costs are considered an occupational hazard.

AnneElliott · 12/07/2024 08:52

I'm not sure if it's the money they bring in @User135644 - possibly the influence the PL has. Mark Robert's the NPCC lead for football has been quite vocal about the impact on forces and it's something that should concern all taxpayers.

To be fair to my dad, even though he was a major fan, he thought the clubs should pay the full economic cost of the policing as that was only fair.

frozendaisy · 12/07/2024 08:52

The development of F1 cars feeds down into road cars making them lighter, more efficient, there is a lot of design and engineering involved.

Football has a lot of politics and psychology involved, especially national teams.

I am not a big sport lover but can, and enjoy, some if the conversations and influence it has.

And bizarrely love Olympics swimming, I think it's the blue.

The sinking of pints, laddish pub banter about football doesn't interest, well even H and he is a football fan.

Many people don't like standing in rooms looking at paintings painted by dead people. I do. But understand many don't.

Each to their own. It's good we aren't all the same.

Will be watching on Sunday of course, I am vastly outnumbered in this household. And it's fun watching with H, kids and random other teens, they have passion and energy, which is infectious.

Boomer55 · 12/07/2024 08:58

I love football, rugby and tennis. So watch them.

On the other hand, I cannot stand the Olympics - but others enjoy them, so good luck.

I think soap operas are beyond silly, but others enjoy them, so crack on.

We all like what we like - we can all do something else, if we don’t like certain things.🤷‍♀️

TeamPolin · 12/07/2024 09:00

Not remotely interested. So long as the fans behave themselves and don't make us look like a nation of louts, that's all I care about.

Oldfeg · 12/07/2024 09:01

It doesnt create wealth like mining or farming, it redistributes it from the have nots to the haves

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 12/07/2024 09:01

I’m the same. Thought I’d go to the cinema on Sunday to escape it.

it’s showing the football

Sheknowsaboutme · 12/07/2024 09:02

No, im not bothered. I dont support england. I support the opposition, whoever they are

itsalwaysthesame · 12/07/2024 09:06

We are not a football family, however will be watching the final this time.

Made me laugh that our class WhatsApp group was on fire at the thought of our primary school possibly not allowing kids to wear a football kit, some of the responses of pure outrage where quite entertaining

Itsjustnotcricket11 · 12/07/2024 09:09

I do like sports but hate football and hope they lose (though I’m not English and would never support England in anything) I hate the whole culture around football and it was only a few weeks ago that the whole country was booing them and calling for resignations. I have no wish to be around it and won’t be watching the game on Sunday. Will probably go to bed.
