Something beautiful your Mother had…

Mine had a rich green crepe de chine dress from the 70. I do not know exact cut but it was waisted and had floaty cuffed sleeves. All over fabric pattern was swirls like malachite. I do not ever remember her wearing it, but only hanging in the wardrobe. Whether it was for the best, or out fashion? I do remember being fascinated by how the fabric felt - light and airy but with distinct, slightly coarse texture. No idea what happened to it and I do not want to ask, the memory is too special - it was like a glimpse of another life she had before me and chores married life.

My mum had some absolutely gorgeous late 60s/early 70s dresses, including a fabulous psychedelic print sleeveless mini with a scarf tie neck that she wore to my christening.

Also such hats! Bags! Shoes!

We wore them to rags dressing up as small children, and to be honest as a 80s teen I'd have turned up my nose anyway (philistine that I was).

@SingingSands that's very sad. What a bitter woman. I expect it reminded her of her vanished youth, seeing you look so good in them.

Mine had a kind heart.

My mother had a beautiful string of pearls that she received as first prize in a beauty contest in the 1950s

A fake fur coat in the 80s it was grey and so soft and beautifully made.

She used to wear it when she went out with dad on Saturday nights. When she came it was cool and silky to the touch and smelled like anais anais and the cold.

Me 😊😆

Handmade gold and Ruby necklace made by my uncle when she married my Dad (family are jewellers on that side).

Unique.

Wore it on my wedding day.

She hates me now and we rarely speak (mostly NC, my choice) so I doubt I will ever see it again.

A beautiful diamond trilogy engagement ring stolen by the cleaner

My mother had a lovely art nouveau necklace, with delicate silver flowers curling around a piece of obsidian. She probably still has it, but I don't rummage through her dressing table like I did when I was 13.

The sort of face that improves with age. I like to think I've inherited that from her. One of my sisters definitely has, the other was always quite pretty anyway.

A gorgeous silver fox fur jacket with silk lining that she saved her wages to buy when she was 21 (1979) it now hangs in my wardrobe next to my wedding dress

Beautiful green eyes. Very unusual.

It's not beautiful and it's nothing remotely special, but she had a clock hanging in the kitchen for almost my entire childhood. She gave it to me on my request when I bought my own place (they had moved and she wasn't using it at the time). In every house I've owned as soon as I put up the kitchen clock it feels like home.

She admitted when I asked for it that she didn't even like the clock. Why she had it on display in the kitchen for 2 decades if she didn't like it is beyond me... 😅

A fabulous mid length crinoline red dress with white flowers that fitted her like a glove and more importantly made her smile. The way she looked made me want a dress like that.

Orders76 · 10/07/2024 23:37

By the way, my granny and grandad also had similar objects that just made them come alive, a necklace, an instrument, beautiful clothes or objects they identified with.
But it was the person that the object brought out ifywim?

A blue silk co-ord with a pleated skirt. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen and used to hide in her wardrobe stroking it when I was sad. She let me wear the skirt to a family party when I was about 13 and I felt like a million dollars.

My mum was also a very talented amateur singer. (She occasionally performed as a semi-professional, but as a teacher/parent, it was difficult for her to become truly professional). She did had a solo spot once on The Good Old Days! (For anyone old enough to remember that!)

I have a big box of her memorabilia, from various shows that she starred in, in the Leeds and Headingley Amateur Operatic Societies. Lots of publicity photos of her in her stage outfits. Loads of paper cuttings of reviews of her performances too, which is amazing.
