Mumsnet + AI Experiment = Fear for our future

I just tried my first ever AI bot chat thing.... it is TERRIFYING.

See below pic. How can anyone trust any post that comes on Mumsnet when this took less than 5 seconds?
All I have to do is type "Another" and another one churns out.

Please tell me this isn't the future 😫

Okay. Trolls make up their own incendiary threads too, it just might take them a bit longer. Not particularly terrifying though.

That's some pretty good prompt engineering OP!
Don't worry, people will start using chat bots to reply too...

LuckyMum1989 · 09/07/2024 22:34

😔it just makes me so sad. People drive me potty sometimes, some situations seem totally crazy or some received advice can be well-meaning but ultimately unhelpful but it's all part of ... humanity.

I don't think that's the future. What keeps these forums going is people's desire to have their own opinions heard (in my opinion 😆) Generating AI content doesn't stroke your ego in the way that posting your own opinion and then having that validated does.

That is a strangely comforting view!
Thankyou!

But you still had to guide the AI to create this. It didn't just come up with it out of the blue. Ok someone can troll a lot more efficiently with this but it still has to have a human who wants to do that.

dreamingbohemian · 09/07/2024 22:47

Thanks for sharing OP, and yes great prompt work!
I've been on MN a long time and I definitely feel like in recent years there's way more bots and quasi human posting

On the bright side there's an increasing sense that the AI bubble will burst -- the costs are insanely high and there's no killer app yet to justify it.

Coughsweet · 09/07/2024 22:51

But they scrape the internet and that includes capturing utter bollocks.

Ghostlygirl · 09/07/2024 22:56

Is the post 50 words long, rather than 60?

See? My ego has been stroked by your response - if I'd posted something AI generated your thanks wouldn't have been half as gratifying ;)

Hah! I think you're right!
I hadn't counted. I added the number of words in because the first generated post was a verrrrry long rant designed to pit breastfeeding mothers against bottle-feeding mothers. Were it not for BF and FF acronyms being missed, it would have convinced me and got me riled up, so I went for a shorter one.

But turns out it even got that wrong 😅😅
Humans 1 - 0 Robots

You'd think counting would be one part a computer would get right!! (BOOM)

Yay!

Humans 2 - 0 Robots

I am feeling better about the state of the world already!

AI's got our backs, handling the boring stuff so we can chat more. It’s here to boost our convos, not mess them up.

DinnaeFashYersel · 10/07/2024 07:38

AI is neither the magics answer to everything nor the doomsday machine. It's somewhere in the boring middle.

The Yor of conversations I hear about AI are very similar to those I heard about social media 15 years ago.

Chat AIs are just for fun and experimenting

And if you do use them they are a copilot not an autopilot. They need human intervention.

Practical AI is quite useful and will become more so.

DinnaeFashYersel · 10/07/2024 07:39

Excuse the typos.
