Djokovic, was he being fair?

Just seen D's post match interview re the crowd.

He perceived the cries of "Ruuune" in support of his opponent to be Booing towards him (D).

Even if a player is genuinely booed, surely they need to get on with it?

Djokovic has never been a fan favourite but he's really not doing himself any favours here IMO.

I’m no Djokovic fan but I don’t blame him for feeling needled at the treatment he gets compared to the other greats

Tears for Novax.

There was definitely booing, especially after he complained to the umpire. We go most years and I notice a different atmosphere at Wimbledon now.

I saw a clip from the interview on Twitter and I thought his response actually came across as humorous - and telling them he knew what they were doing and he doesn't get a fuck.

I don't really follow tennis but I know enough to know he's not at all popular, but I thought he came across quite well in that moment.

Divebar2021 · 09/07/2024 09:38

I had this conversation with DH as it sounded like boo-ing to me. I don’t think it was a coincidence that it sounded like that. That being said I think it was a mistake to challenge the crowd about it. Surely the best response is to smile, slightly take the piss back and move on. I fear he’s made a rod for his own back now.

Spendonsend · 09/07/2024 09:41

They were clear boos and people trying to hide boos in the 'rune' to get away with it.

I'm not a big tennis fan and just happened to catch thie end of this match. Me and DH were discussing why were the crowd booing, and wasn't that against the Wimbledon spirit. We even messaged a friend who does like tennis to ask l if booing was common now.

TallulahBetty · 09/07/2024 09:41

No sympathy for the raging anti-vaxxer here. Thoroughly unpleasant man.

This. I think the crowd started off simply yelling Ruune and when they realised it was winding him up they continued more loudly.

Roseyjane · 09/07/2024 09:53

I also think it was fair, good for him calling it out, they were absolutely booing him.

They were not yelling rune. They were yelling.roooooooone to make it sound like boo, in a loud hiss.

jennylamb1 · 09/07/2024 10:02

Saw a photo of him pretending to play his racket like a violin- being rude to the crowd thinking that they were sad that his opponent had lost. I think he's unpleasant and a poor sportsman, weaponising the crowd to his own advantage as motivation for his game. Never liked him after the Australian Open vaccination row, thinks he's superior to everyone else and has no thought for anyone else including his own opponents.

Mainoo72 · 09/07/2024 10:07

Djokovic is so tetchy & insecure. He hates fans cheering on his opponents & is desperate to be loved. He just comes across as childish tbh.

The commentators said he does this for his little girl as she is learning the violin - he's done it before.

Bigtom · 09/07/2024 10:31

The crowd were clearly being disrespectful and I thought his reaction was fair enough. It will simply motivate him to be better, so will not have the intended effect anyway.

It’s odd that some people don’t like him because he entirely legitimately chose not to have a vaccine which would only have (arguably) benefitted himself. It must be clear to everyone by now that it doesn’t protect anyone else.

RubySloth · 09/07/2024 10:36

Maybe the posh people forgot it was a tennis match and not a pantomime 😂

Agree with this. I personally find him arrogant.

Not sure whether he was unpopular before the Novax debacle but he does seem needy yet does little to help himself.

Apart from helping the ball boys and girls remove the court cover a few days ago 🙄

I think he thrives on feeling the world is against him, like he subconsciously engineers it.

FifteenAll · 09/07/2024 15:39

I think the crowd’s behaviour was awful. I don’t know why it wasn’t stopped. It did sound like booing and even if it wasn’t it was disrespectful and off putting.

I’m not a Novak fan but when I turned on to watch some of the match yesterday I did think at first the crowd were booing and then realised they were chanting for Rune.

I did then think I wonder if both players know what’s being shouted out! I do think sometimes the crowd should think a bit before shouting these things out as I think would actually be off putting for both sides and if the player’s children are there and watching - not very nice of them to hear.

WhereIsTheHare · 09/07/2024 16:33

He’d implode if he went to the cricket and heard the crowd calling Rooooooooooot. This was exactly the same and, perhaps a surprise to him, not about him at all. Not everything is.

I have no sympathy for him - in my view he’s an A grade arsehole, who loves his self-imposed perpetual victim status.

Tbf I think they said he's done that before, for his daughter. That's who he was looking and smiling at while he did it.

He basically did, didn't he. The interview was a little shitty but basically he was fine. He didn't storm off.

I think he can be a bit of a knob, but I didn't think this was that bad. Not the class that someone like Federer would have had, but I don't actually think that someone should have to not comment at all if they're being bored.

Totally agree.

I think everyone now knows the 'forced vaccination' idea was crazy.

Many people don't appreciate the good work Djokovic does behind the scenes for tennis.
He's been made out to be the pantomime villain and he's far from it.

Summerhillsquare · 09/07/2024 18:57

I don't particularly like him, but on this occasion he is right. It wasn't on.
