Train stations to park outside Liverpool from Wales area

Hi all. Will be visiting Llandudno area soon. Would like to visit Liverpool for a day. Train is long and expensive for 3 of us. Only an hour to drive though but parking etc and car is old. Not sure if congestion charge. Need to check this. Can anyone recommend a local station we could park and travel in to Liverpool that is on the outskirts. Thanks.

Apparently Birkenhead North has 630 spaces. You can get into Liverpool on the Wirral line from there.

Sorry just realised its 1 hour 20 in a car. Don't think there is a congestion charge but would rather park on outskirts.

No congestion charge in Liverpool yet though.

Thank you. Will look in to this.

Hooton, Hoylake and Leasowe have free parking. Travel in on Merseyrail?

Greycheck · 08/07/2024 22:58

Hooton, Spital, Bromborough, Eastham Rake or Ellesmere Port and then get the Wirral line over.

You can park quite cheaply at Seacombe Ferry Terminal and get a commuter return ticket for the ferry across the Mersey. Adult returns are about £4, children cheaper. Not sure about parking charges as I've not done it for a while but I'm tight as a gnat's arse and wasn't fazed by the cost.

Tbh I think it'll be easier to drive into the centre. Liverpool is not a big city and there is no congestion charge. I'm perfectly happy to drive around the city centre whereas the likes of Manchester and Birmingham I find a nightmare. If you go through the tunnels there are car parks not far from the exits (e.g the Q-park at Queens square). If you go across the bridge (remember to pay the toll) then you head in from the other side and there is mount pleasant or st Johns.

I tend to just go through the tunnel and park in the Mount Pleasant car park nowadays as it's cheaper still and my teenagers aren't arsed about the ferry anymore.

Ohh thank you everyone. Really useful. We did want to go on a ferry trip so that could be an option. Ds is 17 so might enjoy that! Noted re all the areas and it's easy enough to park in the centre.

The Mersey Ferries are currently suspended for technical reasons so if you are thinking of getting to Liverpool that way check the Mersey Ferry website before you set out.
Getting a train through to Liverpool from somewhere like Hooton will take at least 30 minutes and will be fairly expensive for 3 of you so a station with free parking somewhere further up the Wirral line nearer to Birkenhead would be better as it will be quicker and cheaper.
Another alternative would be to get the bus from Birkenhead - there is a free car park on Turner Street right opposite Birkenhead library on Borough Rd. The bus stop for Liverpool is on the same side right by the car park and the buses either the 471 / 472 or 464 are every 10 minutes or so. Bus fare is £2 each way and the journey takes about 10 minutes through the tunnel. You can get any of those buses back from Liverpool, get off at the stop right outside the library and the car park is just across the road.
if you’ve got sat nav use the post code for the library and that will give you the fastest route from Llandudno.
As some-one up thread said the drive through the Tunnel is quite straightforward and costs £2.80 each way but some of the car parks can work out quite expensive but I do know that you can park in the St. John’s multi storey car park opposite Lime Street for £6.00, all day if you register beforehand

Thanks for this. Never thought re bus especially with 2.00 thing. Yes I saw re the boats suspended.
