YourBusyTurtle · 08/07/2024 18:55

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and need a root canal on one of my molars!!

Has anyone had a root canal when pregnant/had a root canal at all? Does it hurt during/after? how long does it take to settle?

thank you

Yes, I've had one - no pain at during or after, just took a while. 2 x 1.5 hour appointments, mostly I just got bored 😆

Thank you! Did you have a crown?

Actually got the crown fitting next week! The root canal was done almost 3 years ago and lasted well as there was still a lot of tooth, but the tooth has broken a couple of times so I decided time for a (very expensive!) had all the impressions last week and crown will be ready next week, all been straightforward and non painful.

I've had two root canals. Provided that the dentist gives you enough anaesthetic, it is ok. It makes your jaw ache from being open for so long and leaves you feeling tired and a bit sorry for yourself.

Yes. It took sodding ages. Jaw ache from keeping mouth open so long. And really weird sensation due to the depth. But no pain (after lots of numbing injections) all went well, took a while to settle down, crown fitted on top. Probably about 7-8 years ago and no complaints. Which is just as well because it was bloody expensive!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/07/2024 20:17

I've had two root canals. I opted for no anaesthetic as I hate the injections. As others have said, keeping your mouth open for so long is the difficult bit. I had my most recent one about 4 years ago, the roots were twisted around each other so it took forever. But it didn't hurt the next day

Thank you! When it took a while to settle down how bad was the pain?

My root canal tooth went strong for 10 years before needing a crown. Painless and quick recovery. It’s essentially a deep deep filling really.

It is boring and you do get jaw ache. Slather the lip balm on beforehand, really dog it on. My lips being so dry was the most uncomfortable bit. Maybe take some headphones and listen to a podcast as well. It can be a good distraction.

CurryandSnuggle · 08/07/2024 20:23

I had one but the dentist wanted me to wait until after 12 weeks. Maybe ask the dentist if you should wait a couple of weeks.

@YourBusyTurtle I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know. It’s a white one. The tooth crumbled and dentist took an impression and ordered it. Even though the tooth wall eventually weakened and fell away I felt no pain at all so it really wasn’t a bad experience.

GoodVibesHere · 08/07/2024 22:30

One of mine was never crowned, and lasted for 20 years. My other one was done 8yrs ago and crowned, that one is still ok.

I had one done, it failed and I had it extracted rather than go through the experience again. Now many years later i'm choosing to have 2 extractions and dental implants instead, mostly due to the health dangers of a root canal and TTC again.

Did it fail straightaway? How did you know it had failed?

I had one years ago but wasn't pregnant.

It didn't really hurt and took less than half an hour but the anaesthetic lapsed my face a bit so wouldn't recommend going anywhere afterwards just in case it has the same effect

Is all okay with it now? Did it hurt after?

It was absolutely fine but the same side of the face did droop a bit for a couple of hours after. Not much pain although you'd expect a little, don't want you to worry.

I had arranged to meet friends for coffee afterwards so I texted immediately when I got out and said I was drooping a little, might not have this effect on other people! It wore off anyway.

Best of luck with it

Thank you very much! Fingers crossed! Did you have a crown on it after?
