I don't separate as I don't own anything white Grin

I have some white knickers that I keep to wear under the white trousers and skirts that I don't actually possess.
Other than that, I don't have anything white

UpThereForThinkingDownThereForDancing · 08/07/2024 20:21

I bought some beautiful white bras once (pre kids). I lovingly washed them by hand in special whites hand wash detergent... They were still grey within 3 washes!!! Wtf.
That was the point at which I decided I didn't know the secret.

HalfwayToHell · 08/07/2024 19:44

I think you have missed the point. I think the point that was being made was that you can spot whites that haven't been separated from darker colours. That's all.

My point is it wouldn't register with me. Why would you care about another person's washing.

I don't, but I care about my washing.

There are a lot of defensive replies on this thread.

My initial reply was to a poster who did notice other people's washing.

I'm not defensive, i rarely do my own washing, I just thought it was odd to spend sports day looking at how white kids sports tops were.

Smigglewriggle · 08/07/2024 20:41

Oh I know people can probably tell. Same with ironing. Doesn’t make me give any more of a shit tbh! Kids are still primary and also wholly unbothered. If they want white whites at secondary I’ll separate them.

SwedishEdith · 08/07/2024 20:46

The suncream will have ruined my whites long before not doing laundry properly will. Fortunately, I don't suit white except, every summer I still succumb to a white cotton top. I never learn.

Motheranddaughter · 08/07/2024 20:53

I can see why some people think it doesn’t matter
I do whites /light colours/dark colours /sheets /woollen and delicates

I really don’t think that poster “spent sports day” checking out people’s whites 😂. Believe it or not, it’s possible to enjoy sports day AND separate your whites! Just like it’s possible to enjoy sports day and not separate your whites.

You can definitely tell. But who gives a fuck, really? Life is too short for all the faffing about. Having said that I just don’t really buy anything white for that reason.

Go on then... Is mine separated or bunged in ...?

Unashamed whites separator here. I grew up in a household where this was unheard of so take a lot of joy in my nice gleaming whites.

That wasn't the point, the point was that I just can't imagine noticing how white other kids sports tops are.

GeneralMusings · 08/07/2024 18:47

What do the white seaparaters do about say white and blue striped shirt. Or gingham dress or other mixed things?

Yes the Breton stripe is a perennial nightmare. Naturally these go in a mixed wash, with bated breath!

Tarantella6 · 08/07/2024 21:13

Surely by this stage of the school year there isn't a child in the country wearing a pristine white shirt? I do separate whites, and always put in Vanish, but I don't replace for paint / pen stains so by July they are looking distinctly grubby despite my best efforts!

GeneralMusings · 08/07/2024 21:15

Oh for sports day and picture day-a more experienced mum absolutely taught me to keep a polo shirt or two separate from the pack (and buy several... They're cheap) for summer.

We did this. Pristine for sports day and photo day despite others looking a bit... Worn.

Bunged in

pictoosh · 08/07/2024 21:21

As if life isn't hard, busy, overwhelming and demanding enough without silly women judging each others fucking laundry.

MonsteraMama · 08/07/2024 21:26

So the people from the Daz adverts who give a shit about this sort of thing actually do exist? Wild.

Skykidsspy · 08/07/2024 21:27

Do you mean just whites? I just do a lights wash and dark/brights wash. I don’t think I’d have enough of just white stuff!

DrCoconut · 08/07/2024 21:29

I'd like to know what possesses decision makers to have white clothing included in a primary school uniform.

Cantileveredy · 08/07/2024 21:30

I think llamajohn is a new polo...

We generally dont have white but dc now has white polo uniform. It gets bunged in. I think its fine.
However
I always wash new clothes before wearing and probably only darks together etc.
We keep clothes a long time so most wont be losing much colour.
White for clothes is gsnedally pretty crap and primary especially shouldnt be allowed!
Our primary is a colour and oit doesnt get dirty etc but saw a primary kid in white polo - so muddy.

BillieJ · 08/07/2024 21:35

I'm sure my whites looked better when I lived in a soft water area - that was in days of white school shirts. And before that, I used to wash nappies on a boil wash. Now, I deliberately have white towels, sheets, tea towels and dishcloths, so I have a load every week. Just about everything else is 'dark' and washed at a lower temperature. I don't think whites would pass a test even though they're separated, and that's why I no longer buy white T shirts, tops etc.

Oblomov24 · 08/07/2024 21:45

Pre ironing.
They aren't too bad. Dh is very particular about his clothes, and also wears a lot of white work shirts when he comes back from his holidays, part/italian so goes brown as a berry.

ALunchbox · 08/07/2024 21:50

I make an effort for normal clothes but school uniforms don't deserve the hassle. They can turn grey, they will keep all traces of markers and felt tip pens. No way am I going to make any effort with that.

Mrsdyna · 08/07/2024 21:54

I would separate but there are never enough dirty whites to bother and I just don't really care that much.

Psspsspssssss · 08/07/2024 22:01

RampantIvy · 08/07/2024 18:51

I wear white and our sheets are white. I like my whites to stay white so I do a white wash because it isn't difficult to make up a load.

I would hate to wear dark clothes all the time.

You do realise that there are other light colours, not white and actually white isn't even scientifically a colour?

I wear a lot of light colours (blues, pinks, greens) never been stained by being in with darker clothes.

No white though - it shows the slightest hint of stain.
