I separate my whites and they still look shit!

This exactly! Whites go grey because they just do, they lose the will to live, even when you separate them and love them and give them special whites powder. I can only blame the washing machine who must whisper misery in their ears with every wash.

BeaSure · 08/07/2024 18:44

*Some kids at dc school have very very discolored white polo's. I'm far too fussy even a bit off white I wouldn't let them wear.

Dcs at different schools so we have
White polo's
Blue polo's*

I'm fussy about aberrant apostrophes. Or apostrophe's as you would no doubt write.

Ponderingwindow · 08/07/2024 18:46

I don’t buy white clothing. I’m far too clumsy for white.

GeneralMusings · 08/07/2024 18:47

What do the white seaparaters do about say white and blue striped shirt. Or gingham dress or other mixed things?

llamajohn · 08/07/2024 18:47

I'll have to rummage some out

My whites all have baked bean stains down them. Even when I separate them and use whitener in each wash.

Hang them somewhere where they will get sunlight. It fades out tomato based stains.

RampantIvy · 08/07/2024 18:51

I wear white and our sheets are white. I like my whites to stay white so I do a white wash because it isn't difficult to make up a load.

I would hate to wear dark clothes all the time.

FragileWookiee · 08/07/2024 18:53

The only whites we have are school polo tops and they are covered in marker pen and normally by this time of year, suncream stains. So I don't bother to separate my washing. It all goes in together

Octavia64 · 08/07/2024 18:54

I don't care.

I mostly don't have white clothing.

Sheets etc go through on a linens wash so I suppose that counts as whites (the duvet covers have patterns on them, does that count as whites?)

Actually I do have a couple of plain what t shirts but that's about it,

scrivette · 08/07/2024 18:56

I separate all my whites - DC's shirts are all very white except for the whiteboard marker, oil and paint stains down them.

No picture, but DD's school has a white PE top. Shall we just say that I could tell exactly who separated their whites and who didn't at sports day!

That's really weird that you noticed and then wrote it here. Hopefully the kids were having fun and couldn't care less what they were wearing.

Workhardcryharder · 08/07/2024 19:21

I do separate but to do so I have to sacrifice an empty laundry basket. I need to have a very full laundry basket at all times so I actually have a full wash of each!

I think you have missed the point. I think the point that was being made was that you can spot whites that haven't been separated from darker colours. That's all.

Me too. I've tried everything and am baffled how people keep their whites white. I wish I knew the secret!

Glittertwins · 08/07/2024 19:30

I could tell the difference with the DCs primary school polo shirts. I did separate them in the end, they were looking pretty manky (but clean!)

spikeandbuffy · 08/07/2024 19:30

I don't separate as I don't own anything white Grin

Leoraah · 08/07/2024 19:35

I didn't used to separate my whites but I started when my 8yo DD came home from school and asked why all her tops were grey instead of white like her classmates!😂 Vanish in the wash does make a difference!

bugaboo218 · 08/07/2024 19:36

i don't give a shit if someone wants to judge my laundry why would I? Life is too short and anyone judging really needs to get a life!

i have far too much laundry to do, so I am not going to be anal about separating white school polo shirts that are grubby anyway, especially at this time of year. They have paint and marker pen on them and despite washing in vanish and soaking in napisan - the pen and paint stains do not come out!
All gets chucked in together with a colour catcher and a bit of vanish.

i have 3 children at 3 separate schools with different colours of uniform -the only thing I separate from other laundry are the red school cardigans and maroon school jumpers.

I do not iron anything either it slll gets tumble dried together.

simonthedog · 08/07/2024 19:37

Why care about other people's whites, if they don't care.

llamajohn · 08/07/2024 19:39

Here you go... The picture covering the school logo might put you off :p

My point is it wouldn't register with me. Why would you care about another person's washing.

pilates · 08/07/2024 20:02

@llamajohn you’re brave. I don’t think you separate.

Pigeonqueen · 08/07/2024 20:04

You can definitely tell. But who gives a fuck, really? Life is too short for all the faffing about. Having said that I just don’t really buy anything white for that reason.

IWishIWasABaller · 08/07/2024 20:07

I'm a big separator! White and lights , darks , colours , towels , wool/knit and always wash yellow clothes separately too. Just something I've always done and I am sad enough to enjoy it 😄

Spendonsend · 08/07/2024 20:11

I used to be wowed by of some of the white polo shirts at my sons school. I'd even taken to separating the washing, vanish and so on to try fit in, but mine were never up there. They were always a bit grey. I then discovered a lot of the mums were chucking out polo's at the first hint of grey, or at each half term as 'they were so cheap in sainsburys'
